I've built complete engines and transmissions in an afternoon but that means I have all the parts on hand. My powerglide for instance was 4-6 months waiting on parts but a 2-hour build. My 9" was an hour assembly a month of waiting on parts and an afternoon to install, my 388 was almost a year waiting on parts and assembly took maybe 4 hours before firing it on the engine stand. When I swapped the engine and trans into the truck the old engine and trans was out in an hour and a half Friday after work with a buddy from work stopping by to help me lift the front clip off the new one was bolted in its place about an hour later and the next day was plumbing and wiring. Sunday morning, he stopped back over to help put the clip back on by that afternoon I was test driving it. He did no other work just helped me lift the clip off and then back on I did all the work myself.

For me it's not the build/assembly of things it's waiting on parts. It's defiantly better than 4-5 years ago but some items still take a while to get.

Also, I do not have a lift I do it all on the garage floor/driveway and 90% of the time I'm even too lazy to fire up the compressor and wait on it to fill so hand tools.
