Who offers the highest quality rebuilt 700R4 transmission for my 84 K20? I'm not looking for a racing Trans but it will be right behind a healthy 383. I just want a relatively stock replacement that shifts quickly and firmly....w/o spending more than $2500 give or take. Any suggestions?

DIY. I literally just finished rebuilding one myself. Took the test drive an hour ago lol.

It wasn't bad. Watched some of Nick's videos and bought the ATSG manual. There is also a great thread on the 67-72 Chevy truck site that has a picture step by step guide.

Rather than pull mine out of the truck and leave the truck immobile, I bought a 89 700r4 core with engine attached for $300 and rebuilt that. Took me about 4 months on and off in 2 hour chunks. Which I admit is way slow, but it's what I could make work with a toddler around and my limited funds. Only bought a few special tools and 3d printed the Teflon seal stretcher rather than buy one. I'm probably around $1100 into it with the tools. Let me know if you have questions on tackling this job yourself.

You should rebuild his for $2,400. And you might want to shoot for 3 months rather than 4.

Just went and added everything up and my guess was a little off. I'm 1250 into my rebuild with a couple optional upgrades. This number does not include the core transmission I bought because that's an optional step I took.

Thanks for that. I rebuilt a 200R4 many years ago but now I don't want to take time to rebuild it myself. I just want to do a swap. Maybe I will rebuild it and put it in the El Camino in a little while.

If you are in AZ, ship a core to @NicksTransmissions in Las Vegas. It is your safest bet. If you watched some of his videos rebuilding a new "HD 700R4" that melted down, you'll realize all you are paying for sometimes is stock parts and black paint when you buy them through the mail. Would have cost way to much for me from the east coast, but maybe parts labor and shipping would be close to $2,500 and you at least know what you got.

Don't buy anything from Powertrain Products. I am on my 4th rebuilt transfer case from them (all under warranty). All 4 immediately leaked as soon as they had fluid in them without moving the truck an inch . Remove and install was on me for all 4 (god I hate that job). #4 leaked too, but it stopped for now so I am going to let it ride just because I don't want to deal with the job again right now and I still have a 3 year warranty if it comes back or gets worse.

Nice work, @EvilGenius! Thank you for all the views - appreciate it :favorites13:

I can build you a nice 700R4 for around that ballpark, largely depending on how you drive the vehicle...Depending upon what part of the year your 84 unit was built, you may have either a 27 spline input shaft and small diameter pump stator or the 30 spline input shaft (much better) w/the standard diameter pump stator. If you have the former, we would upgrade you to the latter, if I was to rebuild your transmission.

Let me know if you'd like to explore it and I'll send you PM w/my contact info (My incoming DMs are deactivated).

Alternatively, you can try to tackle the job yourself using my videos and the ATSG manual, pocketing the savings or reinvesting it into the transmission in the form of additional upgrades.
