How did this start? Any work done recently? Seems like you've been working on it was that before or after the problem? Did you do plugs wires,cap,rotor, if so double check the plug wire routing at the cap and plugs,then check it again. If none of that checks out get a vacuum reading and do a little research as to what your vacuum reading tells you. There is a lot more to it than numbers. It can find all kinds of problems.

How did you adjust timing and the carb? What's the timing at? Need way more info

Idle mixture screws only control idle. You have to pull the carb apart to adjust or tune.

Here is a good read on cause of different types of backfires.usually an imbalance of fuel ratios between cylinders.

Backfiring into exhaust usually has completely different causes than backfiring into intake. Need more information.
