I'm being offered this air filter for my 292 with a Rochester Monojet carb; I currently have the stock assembly installed, and I was wondering if anyone has ever used one of these, and if there are any advantages/disadvantages using one or the other. Thanks!

I don't have it running yet, but I found a stock one for my 292. I'd prefer the stock one. I am not metric savvy, so I had to get out my metric engineer's scale to see what the measurements are. Seems small. I'd stick with stock if you have it, you definitely don't want to restrict air flow. Post up measurements of the stock filter element for comparison.

The stock assembly has an opening towards the front of the engine, that's 2 1/2" wide and 1 1/2" tall.
The one being offered is 9 1/2" in diameter, open all around, and 1 1/2" tall.
So, the new one has more of an opening than the stock assembly does, despite being way smaller.
However, it doesn't have a "snout" towards the front-ish of the engine, so it will be breathing more hot air from the engine bay.
Reckon the new one would look like this:

I've used the open style on my '65 with a 350, but it was all I had. I later got one for a late 60s 350, that has the snorkel. To me, they were comparable. The engineers designed the factory unit to breathe sufficiently for the engine to operate at WOT, so it's up to you. Personally I like colder air going into the engine. Ultimately it's how clogged or unclogged the filter element is that depicts how much flows. Even a fully open unit can clog and restrict air flow.

You don't want a short air cleaner assembly, personally,if I were to use the second one,I'd stack 2 elements and get a longer bolt. The air will transition into the carburetor easier and with less turbulence. There is a reason people run velocity stacks and salad bowl mods. Also taller will deal with fuel standoff better.
