New to this as of today. have no idea what I'm doing on here if if this will work. I'm building a 1987 4x4 crew cab from the frame up. The body shop gutted the cab and threw away my parts. I had to start again with a bare cab. I have a 1990 wire harness in it from a suburban. However, I want to run my older carbuerated 454 engine and a automatic transmission. However, I'm unsure as to what my best options are for the trans and case. Was thinking of a 700r4 and np208 transfer case for the better fuel mileage. Would rather not have to pull the '90 harness back out because the cab is fully loaded. Is it possible to run this drive train and not use '90 engine harness?

Welcome to the forum Tim. There's only a couple of wires you need to run the carb'd engine. They should be in the harness.

gpmorgan thanks for the imput. I'm concerned about the wiring for the trans and case also. Not sure if earlier 700r4 and 208 cases were mechanical? what years did they go electrical to where I may need a computer to run them?

My main purpose or use of the truck would be to use as a casual summer driver so I really don't need a 400 and 205 case. I have them but seeing how it won't be driven in the winter and only off road would be to haul a trailer and another truck to a truck pull.

a 7004r wont last long behind a 454 unless built, but that costs money in that case go with 4l80 swap as for transfercase a np208 has never failed me yet

Have talked to a few major trans builders in the past about using a fully built 700R4 into by 84 Dually. All said while they would hold up to the HP listed it their ads the constant torque being applied during towing would take it out. None recommended it as an option and would not warranty it. If you do use the 700R4 just be sure not to tow in OD and not try to keep up to speed on hills.

The 4L80E NP208 swap will work good for you. If your worried about it not being strong enough, you could step your transfer case up to a 241C. You will save a lot of weight this way also. Quick question for you though do you still have the 205 transfer case from your 87?
