Since were on the topic of mpg here, gonna borrow your thread K. This is being asked by an owner of an 80 El Camino.

80ElkyOwner said:
I know the whole MPG thing has been brought up here many times but I have a specific question regarding it and my 1980 El Camino. I am very close to giving up on my 80 El Camino and selling it along with all the parts I have gathered for it. It currently has a 267 V8 with the TH-250 auto trans and 2.73 gears in it. I have a 355 short block with flat top TRW pistons and built Vortec heads awaiting to be put on it. I do not have a cam yet since I haven't decided on roller or flat tappet (probably flat tappet since money is an issue).

Anyways, here is my question... Is there any way to build a reliable yet decent gas mileage engine and trans combo to throw in this car/truck? I am looking for about 18city/25highway. More would be great but I do not see it happening with such a heavy and horribly aerodynamic designed vehicle. I would love to push close to 340HP or so as well. My thinking on it is, run an OD transmission, better gearing (not sure what would be best), and try to drop some weight off this thing such as aluminum rad support, lose the front and rear bumper for a glass roll pan and glass painted front bumper, run a low-mid torque cam and Quad-Jet carb.

Any information, suggestions and opinions would be greatly appreciated! I have a feeling my goal is too far out of reach and if this is the case I will sell the El Camino. I do not want to but I need something decent on gas but cannot afford a new car or ecobox Honda.

I said,
You're wanting 340hp out of a NON computer controlled, NON ROLLER, old school motor and want 18 city and 25 highway??? I'm not even going to go out on a limb and so NOWAY. I'll just say NOWAY.

I know of a 2005 Grand Prix GXP with an aluminum 5.3 motor, computer controlled, roller motor with displacement on demand, means it cuts down to 4 cylinder operation on the highway, overdrive transmission and it doesn't get 25 mpg on the highway. IIRC, it's 310 or 320 horsepower.

Man Oh Man, am I ever the bad guy. A few guys think I'm crazy saying it can be done with 200-4r Trans, 3.08 Gears and an RV cam. If this was true, I'd be getting me an El Co ASAP.

Did you by chance ask is he's going to bush the throttle plate shafts??? At least the primary, if going thru the trouble, may as well do the secondary too. Once you get this done with the bushed shafts and the plugs epoxied, then after that, come next time it ever needs a rebuild you can just put a kit in it and clean it with a good carb soak, then rinse and blow dry.

i recommend after you have your carb rebuilt find a person that has a flow bench and set it to factory specifications.

Where is the rest of that article. I'd like to see that end up in the Square Library if we can get the whole thing.
