My truck originally came with an inline 6 and 700R4. The tranny needs a rebuild. I'm dropping in a sb 350. Question is can I use the 700R4 that came with the i6?

yes you can, the stall speed on the I6 converter will likely be higher then a V8 converter would be, aswell as the 3-4 clutches, the V8's use an extra set of clutches. It would work.

Could it be rebuilt to the specs of one fitted behind a v8?

I would bore that 6 .20 over, and install a 292 crank...if it could even be done.

As pops said, yes it will work, and it will work as is. But, when the time comes to build the 700r4, be sure to get V8 clutch drum pistons. That is all you will have to change so the drums hold the extra clutch in each clutch pack. And then of course the converter as pops mentioned. That's all the difference is.

Pistons should be the same, the difference will be in the pressure plates. Different thicknesses for different clutch stack ups.

I won't argue that with a 700r4 since I am not 100% positive, but I am 100% positive on Th350's. On Th350, the 6cyl pistins are about an 1/8 bigger, or taller. Th350 also has different sizes of pressure plates, but they are basically for selective sizes to change clearances, not the # of cluthes in the drum. Chevy, Buick, Olds, and Pontiac also had different clearances and used different pressure plates for that reason I know, sounds strange, but its true. But, normally a piston is shorter for the v8's and taller for the V6s in most transmissions. But 700r4...

aslong as you have the proper number of clutches and steels, and the gap is correct it wont matter.
