Hey guys, just started tinkering on my new to me 84 6.2 liter burban. The trans winds up in first and shifts to third. I have me let off the throttle to keep from redlining the motor and it'll shift then stay in 3rd. I haven't driven truck far enough to see if it'll get overdrive and lockup yet. It's full of fluid. Haven't touched the TV cable yet but thinking it's more serious than an adjustment but that's why I'm asking on here. Thanks!

Are you sure it is 3rd? the drop from 1st to 2nd is rather large in 700r4 and it is possible that the TV cable is not adjusted correctly causing it to shift very late.

Definitely 1 to 3. I've had several 700's and know the shifts well. After doing research I'm pretty positive it's a 2nd gear band issue. Was hoping for a simple secret fix but not usually my luck.

It's sounds like you know what you're doing so I don't have much to offer. But one thing, have you checked the governor driven gear for an "apple cored" condition? It is usually associated with a failure to shift out of first at all, but will sometimes manifest itself as skipping 2nd and going straight to 3rd:

"Applecoring" of a governor driven gear may cause erratic or no upshift conditions on the THM 400 and the THM 700-R4 transmissions. An improved governor driven gear with higher fiberglass content is available and recommended as a replacement on all models.
