What did you do for the shifter to have it work right with the extra positions? I have a 700-R4 in an 82 GMC and swapped in a tilt column that was supposed to be from a Suburban with a 700-R4. Hah. Probably was one that had been swapped in place of a TH350. I can get its notches to align with any one gear, neutral or park while nothing else aligns.

Sure would be nice if some company would get with it and make retrofit 4 speed kits for the 1980's 3 speed columns like they do for the 60's and 70's with the indicator on the column. There are no more 80's 4 speed columns to be had, they're always gone the instant a factory 700-R4 truck hits a junkyard.
man you hit the nail on the head, and whats worse is all these columns although appear to be identical, there are many lengths and subtle differences within years/models.....im having issues with mine (81 cab/700r4) to work at all near linkage on trans and its between 89-91 standard pickup column....aaaaarrrghh !!

The aforementioned military 3500 axles are 5/4 ton axles , from a cucv.

Kingpin Dana 60 front (sometimes trak-lok)
14 bolt full float rear end (detroit locker usually always)
4.56 geared.

You'll have to do something with your steering to make it work (larger TRE), and you'll need at least a 16.5 wheel to clear the bigger brakes. And a bigger master cylinder.

If this is street driven you won't be a big big fan of the Detroit on pavement

We still have no earthly idea what's under the hood, but presumably if it's just a stock 350 or something?

A set of 1 tons would be cool af, but maybe not with a detroit.

Something that's a clutch type locker would be more agreeable on the street.

And 3500 leafs in the back?

I'm sure that's a blast to drive
thats good info my friend, ill keep you in mind when i start updating the diffs.....for advice.

I think @82sbshortbed got a 700 from jegs. I don’t know if it’s installed yet.

The price seemed reasonable. You could regear just the rear axle for now, but remember to not use 4wd at all. What transfer case do you have?

I have found rebuild set of 4.56 CUCV Detroit locker rear and spicer front, I know I’ll have to reweld rear spring perches. But I’m rebuilding the 700R4 locally and the trani guys said I may need to replace transfer case? That’s new to me, I think it’s an NP241?
Any advice would be great!

Your trans guy is an idiot. If you have a 700 in it now why would you have to change the t-case if your putting in a 700?

I'm confused on the np241 part, do you need VSS or something ?

I have 3.42 gears, front and rear, if I drop in 4.56 3/4 ton axles, will I need to replace the NP241 to match 4.56 gears? It’s tag says 3.42?

Your transfer case is totally irrelevant to your axle ratio, or a different 700R4. Your having transmission problems, not transfer case problems. Don't sweat it.

The 700R4 may share some fluid with you NP241 (at least my 700R4/NP208 combos do), but that's no reason to replace the transfer case. The amount of fluid they can share is relatively small. Just change the fluid in your transfer case.

If the NP241 is different from the NP208 in that respect, someone please correct me.

I took out the 700r4 and NP241, I just picked up M1028 CUCV 5/4 ton axles, with disc all around hi steer kit and gonna install a 4L80, custom built. What transfer case would you guys install with this driveline upgrade?

The NP205 is a solid choice.

Just put a 32 spline input on the stock 241. Its gonna cost you a lot more to get a 205 to work on the 4l80 and you will lose the really low 4lo gearing.
