I have a sbc 305 in my 82 c10. I saw a 5.7 vortex motor for sale for $100 on fb and he lives in my town. My question is. Do you think it would be worth buying it for the heads to put on my 305? Would that require diff headers than the ones I bought for the 305? He actually has 2 motors $100 each. I know the vortex heads breathe much better than the 305's do. Appreciate any input. Thanks.

I’d rebuild the VORTEC 350 and use the 305 as a seed starter, 8 plants at once.

The small bores of the 305 restrict air flow from the the valves into the cylinders, you would be better off rebuilding or finding a running 350 to put the heads on. You can use the Vortec 350s you mentioned but you need to be aware they may not have a mount for the fuel pump so an electric one would be needed and the vortec heads have a different bolt pattern than the intake on your truck.

Wont need new exhaust manifolds or headers but you will need a new intake manifold.

We all know what most people think of a 305 but I would rather swap heads and an intake than pull the whole motor if I could. I assume for $100 those engines are probably cores. Do you know whats wrong with them? Also whats wrong with your 305 besides that fact its a 305 lol

You can not put 350 heads on a 305. It go BANG if you do. And I mean BANG only one time... That will be a valve striking the deck of the 305 block.

Take advice from Honky, rebuild the Vortec. Verify it is actually a Vortec and that the heads are not cracked. If it has been overheated there is good chance of a cracked head.

I need to proof read my post more. I just saw my typos. Lol Samsung put the x too close to the c. Hahaha *******. Nothing's wrong with the 305 I just saw the motors for sale and thought for $100 was a good deal. It has the intake, throttle body and exhaust manifolds on it. Says needs to be rebuilt but haven't asked him why yet. Just need to go look at it to see what's up with it. Looks like he pulled them out of a vehicle.

Just say NO to 305s...

A box of rocks is still cheaper than $100.

Lets just ASSume for a minute that the engines need a full rebuild. You may want to think about a crate engine if you're in the market for an upgrade. Unless you're refinishing the blocks yourself then disregard lol. Then again, $100 for an engine isnt much if its going to bring you some knowledge and experience (if you dont have any building a block)

I can justify about any purchase lol, my wife hates me.

For $100 its still cheaper than paying for a core charge on a crate/rebuilt engine. Buy it take it apart with someone that knows what they are looking for to make a good decision on what to do with it. If its junk use it for a core charge, if its usable could be a good builder, if its fine drop it in.

If you use the vortec heads your on your 305 your going to have to use that intake or getting you another intake to use on them vortec heads
