Hi all,

I've got a nasty vibration coming through the rear end between 30-60mph.
I fitted new prop joints as the rear was moving around in the pinion carrier.
New ones do the same!
I am sending the prop off to check and balance, but is this movement normal?!?!
The UJ presses into the prop perfectly - no movement - but once bolted to the pinion carrier, there is probably 0.2" side to side movement in that side of the UJ - which is what I had before and why I swapped out the UJ. It is a Moog.

Thanks
Keith

Nearly a 1/4" of movement is not normal. Either you have the wrong U-joint or you have the wrong pinion. You need to give the pinion to the driveshaft shop. They should be able to find a u-joint that will work.

That’s what I thought.
But it’s all factory correct, and the Moog UJ is the only size listed, and fits the prop perfectly ‍
Will see what the prop guys say.

I've had too match them by diamension before. Just because it is one size at the driveshaft, does not mean it isn't a different size at the differential yoke. I've got 2 vehicles that are 2 different sizes on the ujoint. I is my 75 k.

Yes, some drive shafts have one size on the drive shaft and another at the yoke.

Example 1310 on one side 1350 on the other.

Are they available to buy like this, or do you have to buy two different size UJ,s and mix and match?

0.2 side-to-side at the pinion definitely doesn’t sound normal. If the UJ is tight in the yoke but you still get movement once it’s bolted up, I’d be looking at the pinion yoke or even the pinion bearings themselves. That kind of play could easily cause the vibration you’re describing.

Its pretty hard to explain without video.
There is no free play in the pinion.
The UJ is nice in the prop.
The UJ in the pinion flange is where the problem lies.
The UJ slides up and down within the caps, and the caps have movement with the in the pinion flange. They don't fall out - but certainly move.

I currently have Moog 534G fitted.
This fits the prop perfectly - but the issues above on the Pinion flange end.

What rear axle? If it is a 12 bolt it will most likely be 1310. 10 bolts were what they call a 3r/s44. But if you have an 80's truck with a 12 bolt swapped in that would make sense.

You don't have to mix caps and stuff like that. They make crossover u joints, one half is one size the other half is the other size. You definitely have the wrong ujoint for the pinion yoke side.

It's a stock 10 bolt I think
Would really appreciate any help with part numbers etc to rectify this.

I have a 71 c10 had a similar problem. Pinion straps and pinion got worn out and got loose. Simple fix or experiment was to get a set of morose capture caps. They are for drag racing but enclose the joint from the sides and top.

Moroso U-Joint Girdles 85800

4.25 out of 5 stars ( 9 )

Part Number: MOR-85800

  • Fix the problem till I rebuilt the rear end about 2 years later

Does the pinion yoke have raised edges where the caps sit?
