Been awhile but I just picked up a short bed 1986 gmc Serria every things been untouched minuse the new 350 crate my buddy owed it so I know a lot about it

The gauge some times worked if top you tap on it it goes hay wire. I swaped a flew clusters with it and the only gauges that work are the volt and speedo

I'm sick and tired of the ******** of running out of gas. This is only a single tank truck even tried a few different gauges

there is a ground wire on the top of the gas tank... I can almost put my money on it that its rotted off or is just disconneted

worst case it could be your sending unit, since you have to drop the take to get to the ground wire this could be a good time to replace sending unit
