I recently picked up a '77 C10, to use as a dump running truck while I renovate my house (and eventual project). Part of getting it road worthy I replaced almost everything with the brakes, and I decided it was a good idea (at the time...) to replace the rear seals and bearings.

The pinion stud was a bear to get out and now even harder to get back in. The LS springpack has pushed the plates apart.

Is this "normal"? If so, any tips you gurus with the voodoo so well, give me guidance? If I wanted to eliminate it, what's needed for the change?

Thanks,
The S.

This will probably explain the headache better.... I just don't want to jam tools to finagle the plates into alignment and damage gears as a result.

The gears are hardened steel, you wont booger them up. You're trying to get the crosspin shaft back in? You threw me with the "pinion stud" thing. Just take a screwdriver, start the crosspin shaft in, pry the 1st one in place, you might need to lightly hammer the crosspin once it gets the tension of the 1st one on it, Then repeat for the rest, pry/lightly hammer it home!

Sorry I'm not up on the laymans terms ;) I RTFM'd it and that was the name in the diagram/parts list. So that's cool, after taking this image I have the shaft almost "home". In trying to pry it in I chipped the bearing race (?) that the large spider gear sits in, will that be an issue?

Much appreciated with the previous input!

You mean the cup-shaped washer behind the spider that the crosspin passes through? It shouldn't hurt anything.

I just read you post again. I'm referencing the larger spider gears that the axle goes through.

I got that &$@%# pin in today. Now I can finish up my brake job. Just hope the chip I took out doesn't haunt me....

That's a side gear and it should be fine but a pic would have been 1000x more help at determining if it will be ok or not (usually the case with everything). And we can say ****** here without being banned. :waytogo:

In adjusting the brakes I was able to spin the axles without binding or issues so I think I'm safe.

That's the locking coupling. When one wheel slips the coupler engages and causes the other wheel to get traction. It is hardened steel and will chip but as long as it's not a big chip and it can still engage I would just run it.
