Container based shop: 2 post lift placement advice?

According to my friends, I'm half way there. I currently own more cars that don't work than do. I have my DD (Tahoe) my off-roader (Burb) and now the 77 K20 project (total rebuild), a 95 XJ project (motor, who knows what else), and a commuter car project (piston re-ring and maybe a rod bearing). And storing my buddy's 1980 Toyota "dolphin" RV that has sat for 10 years and needs to get running.

I have my work cut out for me. My shop will be put to good use!

so...if the dolphin has a working HVAC unit,...you have a year round inside work bench,...so you don't have to sweat or freeze in a dust storm....and plenty of storage space for small parts,....and if anyone's spouse temporarily hates them...a place to sleep.

HAHAHA right. It's my buddy's car, we're just going to get it running so he and his wife can escape to wherever and be comfortable. I just needs a typical "sitting for a decade" revival. New fuel, tires, a couple of hours and maybe some parts. We have tune-up stuff for it already. Just needs a place to work (my upcoming shop) and some time.

axle boots/ radiator hoses....and anything else made of rubber. needs to be inspected/ driven and reinspected a few times....as sure to crap out at the worst time.

but yeah...seen them and in pics with the RV box stripped off (like someone was making a car carrier and did not get to the rollback body added
...kind of a cool low slung 6 tire HD, and sad that toyota did not import more = a neat alternative

Another person in this area has done the same thing. I'll be protecting anything sensitive with a custom cover if I need to. As for the mechanicals, they'll get lubricated as needed. I'm not too worried about it.

There's a guy about 5 miles out of town with one in his driveway, all open to the elements. He seems to have it all figured out. And we're many months a year of rain, as y'all probably are aware of. So...

I lived in Castle Rock WA for 3 years, and then halfway between Olympia and Aberdeen for 7 years.

Not much progress, but a little:


Settled on metal stud framing and spray foam insulation. And, uncovered a bunch of mysteries about where the electrical on this property is. I now have a plan to save a ton of money on running 240/120 to the container, AND to a future RV and office. Good stuff. Vevor wire locator on Amazon for $100 saved me TONS of money.

Just balling spit here, but is there any value in having a roof over the roof?

The logic being, if the sun is beating down on a "roof" over the top of the steel container 'roof', catching and absorbing the heat before the sunlight can touch the steel, will it keep the can cooler to work and store stuff in? Having like a one foot airgap between the two so any breeze can help carry off any heat on the can while being shielded from the sun. In order to avoid the whole spray foam and wall skin fiasco? Could extend the idea down the sides with the most sun exposure.

Made of lumber and tar paper/3 tab. Or metal tubing and those recycled billboard tarp/truck lumber tarp material.

Just a thought that seeped out of my cranium while mulling your project/location around in my noggin instead of doing what I should be doing.

I know you have settled on steel. Hope I haven't said squirrel too loud...

There *might* be, but temperature isn't the only problem. There needs to be a vapor barrier against the steel on the inside of the container to prevent condensation. "Container rain" is a thing. I sincerely appreciate the thought though. It would be a lot cheaper than the spray foam!

Beware:

local utilities should "should" have techs that come out and mark with paint / little flags. (like the ominously happy call before you dig phone #,...- where I live I think a meter reader will come out and do it quickly,...and all the utilities will pay for the time).

and its free / complies with the law,...vs. the alternatives (...getting fried, knocking out utilities in a neighborhood,...going to local court to arrange for paying for said neighborhood knockout).

I definitely need to call before we dig. But, they don't mark private stuff. Just public utilities. I researched that before buying my own locator kit. Really, it was $100 well spent. In case anybody wants to try one:

Will a squarebody fit in a shipping container? Anyone have experience? Can I get out the truck door or is it so tight you have to crawl out the back window?

It's gonna be tight tight tight. Pretty sure it's around 7'6" inside one, but I've not measured one in years. Are you a skinny mini?
