In a GM vehicle, black (or white) wires with no stripe are grounds. If disconnected they will cause some accessory to not work properly. .

Newer year truck manuals have color diagrams. Older manuals may have letter codes for the colors, ie, DB-dark blue, LG= light green etc.

Disconnect the tach see if it starts. The tach is probably killing ignition pulse.
