Are these modern carburetors a big improvement?

One guy got a super-rare 58 DeSoto FI Adventurer. He reverse-engineered that FI and realized that the transisters, etc. just couldn't take the heat, and, also were not shielded against electro-magnetic interference, so he replaced all the electronic parts with modern equivalents, and the system...

Are these modern carburetors a big improvement?

If they succeed in shutting CARB down, that will change.

Big block running hot. Can’t figure out the issue

Are you sure that your vacuum advance is supposed to be using manifold vacuum and not ported vacuum? J. B.

hot and rough, running that is

Just a hunch, but what kind of EGR valve do you have? The conventional vacuum operated kind or the exhaust back pressure modulated kind? Does your EGR vacuum line come off of a switch that has 4 vacuum hoses coming off of it? My 81 C10 6 cyl had such a set up, and seemingly two of the hoses...

    Wow, definitely not properly made.

    Problems with new clutch material

I always installed the pilot bushing with the beveled side facing the trans. Should I have installed it the other way - the beveled side facing forward? J. B.

    Problems with new clutch material

No, it is a 3 speed, but the first-gear synchro often doesn't work - over 300,000 miles - so I always come to a complete stop before shifting into first, or, double-clutch.

    Problems with new clutch material

People actually try to re-use an old throwout bearing? Penny-wise and pound foolish for sure. J. B.

    Problems with new clutch material

I've been just living with it, as I have the big heavy duty trans, we have moved and I can't find my transmission jack, and the trans is too heavy for my 70 year old azz to slide out by myself. J. B.

    Problems with new clutch material

Does not want to easily go into first unless I first shift into 2nd, then immediately into first. The 2nd to the last clutch, which I assume had a friction plate that had asbestos in it, didn't do that, it shifted the same whether hot or cold, but the last one would act up hot, and this new one...

    Problems with new clutch material

It is difficult to get into first gear without grinding, unless I first shift into 2nd then right away shift into first. Cold, it doesn't do that, it slips right in. J. B.

Headers? worth the effort & cost?

Always thought headers of any length only helped upper ranges. J. B.

    700R4 to Saginaw 3-Speed Swap

Yes, you can use 4:10, as long as you don't mind staying in the slow lane. There is also 3:73 gears and 4:56 gears.

    700R4 to Saginaw 3-Speed Swap

What is your rear end ratio? With a manual trans, you need shorter gearing, or else it will be "boggy" and gutless feeling. With a straight manual transmission, I would put a 3:73 or 3:55, depending on how and where you want to drive it. J. B.

How to turn a half ton into a 3/4 ton?

If your frame is good, it would be easier to just swap cabs, and if necessary, beds, but if you really want to, you will have to swap the spring shackles, front and rear springs and shocks, axles, including brake drums and backing plates. I have heard both that the 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton frames...

Installing a clutch and flywheel into an 81 with a Saginaw 3 speed

Another tip - make yourself a pair of guide pins by cutting the heads off of two long bolts to screw into the back of the bell housing. That way you can slide the trans back with no risk of it dropping down some and springing the friction plate and maybe even bending the input shaft. J. B.

    Problems with new clutch material

Just put a new clutch on my 73, both pressure plate and friction disk, and a new pilot bushing, and just like the one I removed, it seems to drag after I have been driving and shifting some miles. Is this because the friction plate is made of a new non-asbestos material? J. B.

Headers? worth the effort & cost?

More low-end and more midrange? You sure about that? I always thought headers gave you mainly more top end. J. B.

Headers? worth the effort & cost?

Probably not much, but if you have a hotter than stock cam and have had it ported, then YES you will gain performance. J. B.

250 inline 6 Stalling issue, new to me truck!

Does this carb have an idle stop solenoid? If so, is it working? It should be extended when the engine is running. When you shut it off, it de-energizes and the plunger retracts. The purpose is to prevent dieseling/running on after you have shut it off - when the plunger retracts, throttle...

    Gear Ratio Help

Either change to 4:56 gears, or change to a milder cam that will give you more low-end and switch to 4:11 gears. Your's is pretty aggressive for a truck. J. B.
