So I'm in the process of recovering my dash for my elcamino. I know it's not a square body, but if it works correctly, I'll have a square body dash to do too... Yes, I know I could buy a new one, but some things I like to try myself too. One thing I can never quite find, has to do with the foam. I've seen some people use spray foam of some sort, some bondo, fiberglass, or even polyvalence padded dash filler. All of that stuff is too stiff, so I'm wondering what someone would use for the foam itself. I've asked on some groups on facebook, and all I get is that it's a trade secret, why would they let it out and lose out on money... Which I do get to some extent... So anyone have any idea on something close to the same "squishiness". Thanks

Fabric store has big sheets of foam, maybe like a 3/4 thick piece? Maybe 1/2. Then use quality spray adhesive.

You’ll have to experiment with what’s available to you… it will probably be expensive and frustrating… and in the end you’ll have way more time and energy involved than it’s worth… just my opinion.

My wife will probably hate it, but I didn’t think about it, I might try going to hobby lobby without her to see what I can find there

Sometimes I have more time than money, and sometimes more money than time. I’m also not on a deadline to get it done (my elcamino hasn’t been on the road since 2008, and been in the shop without really touching it since 2022…) The glue and vinyl isn’t really that bad of price. So if it doesn’t work out, I’m not out that much really. A new dash for my elcamino is about $900 shipped, and no one local wants to deal with wrapping it, and by the time I send it off, have it wrapped, and get it shipped back, I’m into it for $1500+. So it’s worth some time to try to make it “mine”. I helped a friend of a friend do some dashes and other interior work back when I was in college, so I know some basics, but he supplied all the materials anyways, but I can’t ask him because he died 10 years ago.
