Your picture just reminded me that there was also a change in the construction of the fuel doors. I don't know what year that happened. Sometime before '84 I believe.
my picture is of a 1980 bed
I should look at the one on my 1980 which is a 1981-83 presumably

Interesting, i bet the plastic liner uses the new made holes to attach to the outer skin to completely seal up the opening from dust/dirt/bugs/water
The shape of the opening is slightly different, and the thing may even be slightly wider.

Like others have said, 79 was the first year for fuel doors on the square body pickups. When I had a 74 Cheyenne Super SWB 4x4, I bought a super clean 84 bed and put on it. It looked really nice on it after it was all done.

Top photo is 1985-87 style. There is a plastic shroud the fuel hose neck screws onto, via 3 small screws.
