Can you run a 700r4 WITHOUT electrical connection?

Took the pan off my 700r4 to drain the oil before I wrestle it to the ground. Noticed wiring inside the transmission, but no wiring Goin to the trans. Found the empty connection on the drivers side. No plug in sight. I’m assuming this is for a lockup converter??

The converter is blue, with D5 stamped all around the perimeter. Not sure if it’s stock or not. Little to no info on the drivetrain.

So is it bad for the trans to run it without this wiring hooked up?

I vote yes, it will be fine, but I think you'll get mixed responses. I'm interested to hear what others have to say too.

The electrical only controls the lock-up converter. Without it, the converter won't lock. No big deal.

The only scenario where I could see a problem occurring is if your cruising in overdrive with RPMs below the stall speed of the converter. Then, you're converter would be slipping when it would otherwise be locked. Slipping converters make excessive heat, and transmissions don't typically like that.

Technically, the trans won’t care. It’s worth a little in both fuel economy and cruise rpm to get it working.

Go to your nearest transmission shop, get a TH400 kickdown solenoid case connector and o-ring.


You can find the MUCH cheaper, any transmission shop can order the part.

The case connector will fit perfectly where the original 4 wire connector went in the 700. Then you can use common 1/4 female quick disconnects for connections on both side of the connector.

Next, you need a normally open 4th gear pressure switch. Your transmission might already have the proper switch, it grounds thru the switch body when pressurized. If your trans doesn’t have the right one, lots of transmissions use a switch like that, once again your nearest transmission shop will most likely have what you need.

Remove all the old wiring, leaving as much of the TCC solenoid wire length as possible. Connect the red wire to the case connector. Connect the black to the 4th gear pressure switch. Reinstall the pan.

Now, you need a way to control the solenoid. My favorite low buck way is a headlight dimmer switch, especially if the vehicle has the dimmer on the column. Connect the switch in line to the case connector. With the switch turned on, the solenoid will engage as soon as the trans shifts to 4th gear.

People will give yoi mixed on this but I've done it without a problem. Pull the torque convertor solenoid,put a check ball on top put it back in convertor will lock in 3rd and 4th

Just reread his post looks like wiring in transmission is intact, just no harness to the transmission All he may need is a transmission pigtail and a little help with the wiring. O.P. verify this. If so this may be dirt simple.

Yes there is wiring inside the trans and perhaps a solenoid near the converter above the filter.

Just no wiring from the truck to the trans itself.

Thought I found the connector, but it’s different than the one on the transmission. Trans has the four pin connector.

This look familiar to anyone? Can’t see it in my Haynes manual.

In my experience, a 700r4 with stock lockup setup will not work work well for long, if the lockup is not functional. It will overheat the trans and cook the fluid. Unless you just run it in third. It may be doable with real steep gears, but most trucks aren't set up that way.

I'm guessing this was a 1973 with a 250/6 and a 3 on the tree that someone put in a 700r4 behind a buick 455. In which case there is no pigtail. Give us some more details I'm sure we can walk you through this.

Truck is titled as an 84. Old guy I bought it from used various year components to build it. Don’t know the exact year of the cab and its wiring harness.

If the trans was not modified to run without convertor lock-up, what can fail is the overdrive planetary gear set. That forth gear planetary is added to the output shaft of what is basically, a Turbo 350C 3 speed.

Since that last planetary gear set is up high in the trans, it does not sit in the trans oil. To add more lubricating oil to the overdrive gear set, a bleed port (orifice) in the main shaft to add more lub when the convertor locks.

For those of you that don't know, the convertor locking piston is applied when oil pressure is switched on porting it into the main shaft.

GM did not paint any convertors when squares were built. The blue convertor is not original.

Well got it out. K case. First digit is a 2, which indicates either a ‘92 or ‘93, depending on which site I look at.

And a 4 pin connector on the DS which looks like it hasn’t been used for years.

Will a non lockup converter work in this type of trans and basically render the lockup system useless/unneeded??

how did they put a 700r4 behind a 455 buick , did they adapt the bellhousing? The 700r4 didnt come in BOP
