Hi all, Im pretty new to the carbureted engine world, and have developed a rusted out tube that is connected in 4 spots on my drivers side exhaust manifold. I have a 1987 V30 with a 454 4 barrel carburetor. After a little research, I have found that it is apart of a smog system that most people seem to remove, so I was wondering what all I go through to remove that entire system. Basically all that I know is that I pulled the drivers side tubes off of the other 3 ports into the manifold, so I will have to pull the other side and weld those holes shut on the manifold. My truck is a plow truck, so everything is rusty as hell, so unscrewing those nipples isn't an option. This truck also has 2 air pumps that I need to remove, so I went ahead and removed the top one, and a couple of the obvious lines. Now i'm at a bit of a standstill, so any help you guys can provide would be much appreciated!

You can remove both pumps, the associated hoses and also the secondary charcoal canister if it's still there. Replace the alternator belt with Dayco# 5060530.

I have marked with an X what else i am taking out. Once those items are removed, and I weld the exhaust manifold holes shut, i am basically unsure of what else needs to be removed/ done. FYI, i am trying to get the nuts removed from the manifolds, so i can screw in a pipe plug, before i am resulting in welding them shut.

That other air pump is about all you have left.

This is everything I removed:

I wouldn't throw the parts out either. The reason I had that picture handy is because recently I had come across a fella in Colorado that needed those parts. So they are in Colorado now and will be used again.

Why did you remove that other steel filter? Also, I would like to know what to remove on this diagram.

I removed the flame arrestor (pretty sure that's what it was anyway) because it seemed restrictive. The butt dyno confirmed it.

I only removed the stuff 100% directly related to the smog pumps. The engine ran great and I didn't see the need to remove anything else.

On my '84 (small block then) though, I removed every last scrap of uneeded underhood hoses and valves. It was all a cobbled mess in that case. I plumbed in a PCV valve, spark advance, brake vacuum and hvac supply. Those last two are not needed on a non-ac truck with hydroboost brakes.

So the thing inside the actual filter is the flame resistor? And you left the parts on each exhaust manifold??

Yes, I left the injection lines in place but they were in good condition. I only crimped the main inlet closed to prevent minor exhaust leaks. I would have removed them too, but they were seized in the manifolds.

^^It was frustrating just to check/add oil. Let alone replace a thermostat or change the plug wires.

Both sides on mine were rusted out, so i just ripped them off, and broke the nut off with my breaker bar, then i plan on welding the holes shut. Does that sound sufficient?

And then any of the vacuum lines that came off of the pumps, I will trace back to a T, or wherever it enters something, and cap it off. And any electrical plugs that i disconnected, I will just leave and wrap in electrical tape. Please comment anything else I am missing, or if I should do something differently. Wont be working on this again til Friday since I’m waiting on a water pump. Should also give ample time for others to see this post.
