So.
Im picking up a 87 4x4 suburban this weekend.
My only interest in it is the axles really. Rest of it is getting used on my k5 build, and whatever is left from that, will go up for sale.

Someone offered $1500 plus a 4x4 burb with no title for my 90 2wd burb.
I jumped on it, finally a set of expendable axles.

ANYWAYS.

Im plotting to solid axle swap my s10.
The time has Come after 5 YEARS!

The pathetic 1/4 Ton suspension can't take the 31x10.5x15's and the "ramped up" 4.3 vortec, I've replaced parts over and over, and I've Replaced the rear end a few times, and #3 is on its way out the door now as we speak.
I finally did a control arm in when we took it wheeling few years back, it bent it, I never fixed it, just no desire any longer to play with cheesy ifs parts.

So 1/2 tons in its future.

Im going to be taking the 10 bolt Front, and retubing it to change it from pass side drop to drivers drop.
Fun stuff right?

Options for a drivers drop solid axle are limited because they are....

1. TOO EXPENSIVE because of crackhead ford dana 60 prices (yes I think CURRENT 60 pricing is stupid)

2. Nearly unavailable.

3. (and) Jeep dana 30 axles are just as cheesy to me as the s10 axles

Moving on, I plan to retube a 10 bolt to swap drop sides, it'll be fun, (yes I'm aware of what that entails)

Im gonna regear to 4.10 or 4.56 for the tires I'm (planning) to move to.

The suburban has either a 4" or 6" lift.
I'm trying to go for 4" of lift, which will allow me to run the desired tires with a solid axle swap.

There's a few other issues to consider when doing this :

Exhaust crossover will be in the way,

And steering box has to go, and we'll move to the famed astro box

I'll have to mill down the pass side knuckle and make my own crossover arm for it (no problem)

Driveshafts will need lengthened.

And there's a good chance the computer might be pissed with me when it no longer has a connection to the front diff.
(t case is vacuum actuated)
But I'll look further into it.

I'll have to remove 1 crossmember in the s10 or notch it to clear steering linkage.

Bracketry for the SAS might be a PIA, but if I can't utilize what's on the 4x4 burb, I'll make my own.

I'll need negative offset 6 lug wheels because I'm not into the "stance" ****.
The wheels on my s10 have some + offset, but only 20-30% of the tire sticks out from the fenders, I like that look, but when the entire tire is hanging out the fender, it just looks stupid to me.

None of this is an issue.
I got time, a little money to play with and a full blown machine shop down the driveway.

Your build mindset is the same as mine. Only you can finance your mind. Lol, looking forward to it.
Deciding if I wanna use the suburban front factory hangers and shackle mounts to bolt the axles up, or if I wanna make my own.
Probably will just cut off the rear spring mounts and relocate so I can just bolt the 10 bolt directly in the back of the s10.

I'll have to cut the front tubes or press them out and switch drop sides so I can make the stock case fit up, the np241 or whatever.

Whatever you do, it's still gonna be an awesome SAS.

I just watched an episode of Ant Ansteads new series on MotorTrend where he did a cool tube swap, and drastically offset the diff. Gonna be alot of work.

Either I'll burn or mill out the plug welds, and press the tubes out, or I'll just set the axle up in the bandsaw and saw them off, and just sleeve it and weld all the way around with a truss,

I have seen the bandsaw method before. Who are you gonna use for the axles?

If you mean axle shafts, I'm going to switch drop sides and just keep tube lengths the same so I can keep factory shafts in it.

I considered shortening it to the same width as the s10 wms/wms, but that would require custom shafts. While I could Make them at the shop, sometimes it's not worth the extra effort

Might I add, I'm going to kick the pinion up while I'm at it to account for driveshaft angles.

@bigcountry78 let me Borrow a set of wagon wheels that are about 8 or 10 wide for the Time being, but
Those + 36x14 + 1/2 tons.....

MEGA WIDE stance, and I'm not about the stance life lol lol

If I go up like an inch more I will have to account for pinion angle.

Figure new perches is the way to go, over shims.

No no no.
I'll be altering JUST the pinion.
Not just rotating the perches about the axle tube.
The outer C's will be at their factory position, center diff will be kicked up x amount of degrees while I'm retubing
