What size compressor have you use to paint your truck? Has anybody ever used a small 6 or 8 gallon compressor with just 1 to 3 hp? Just curious because im looking into get a 8-gallon husky from home depot for normal use, and was wondering if I could use it for paint also. It has 1.5hp. Or theres also a 6-gallon porter cable compressor. Any experiences?
Thanks....

I have t ever done any painting, but I would think you would want more capacity to avoid pressure changes.

There's no such thing as a compressor that's too big. Something around a 25 gallon unit is bottom line marginal for basic automotive use. Never used one for painting, but it's likely too small.

It's going to depend on your budget, but I wouldn't suggest the husky single stage compressors. You can't oil them, and it going to last you about a year. I have bought 3 in 3 years. They are cheap if your in a bind, but disposable.

I have never owned that one. You will probably be alright as long as you can monitor the oil level, but the sealed ones are junk. If your going to try to use it to paint, find a 15 or 20 gallon tank to plumb into it for extra air storage so you can maintain pressure longer. Don't leave the big tank hooked up when your not painting or you will run that little motor to death trying to keep it full.

As far as painting goes, you're going to want something that has a duty cycle that will supply a constant 40 -60 psi. Most automotive air tools will run at a minimum of 90 psi. I've been very lucky with the 33 gallon, 5 or 6 hp Craftsman that i bought a little over 12 years ago. By all accounts, this thing should have given up years ago, but still keeps going, with no noticeable loss of performance. It's built a pole barn, cut, ground, and painted everything on my jeep, and handled countless other heavy automotive repairs. Whenever it finally gives up, I'll replace it with something more suited to the abuse I've put it through.

Long story short, for general home use, and automotive work, i wouldn't recommend anything less than 30 gallons and 5 horsepower.

Out of the average home garage budget, but this is what we just bought for the water department shop. Just got delivered yesterday. http://www.aircompressorsdirect.com...n=271CS80VCB&gclid=CJ77j4bNvMMCFYVAaQodIhgAOQ.

If you just airing up tires and running a small air gun for home projects and stuff like that, the compressor you picked will be fine, but running air tools constantly will burn up a small single stage in no time.

Something like the purple Harbor Freight spray gun uses an average of
6cfm @ 40 psi & working pressure of 20-50psi

These are the 8-gallon husky specs
5cfm @ 40 psi

That's the spray gun i used on my jeep. Couldn't recall the pressure window. I know I sprayed mine at 40 psi.
