First Carb rebuild

Hey guys - just ordered the rebuild kit for me 2GV and will dive in once it gets here. This will be my first rebuild so looking for any hints or tips that might keep me from going astray or throwing a wrench across the garage.

I have a Quadrajet that I was going to swap - but I figured start with something that does not include any new pieces and take lots of pictures.

Use a lipped baking tray or drip pan to work in as it will not only catch remaining fuel/fluids, but also helps contain parts and keeps stuff from rolling away off of the bench.

Lots of pictures is good. I like to match up my new parts with the old parts to verify they are a match, and lay them out next to each other and whittle away until it is all old parts on the bench.

These are die cast construction, be mindful of threads, nothing should really need to be gronked on, thread repair isn’t really fun.

If you are removing the throttle blades, grind off the end of the screws first, they are peened over to keep the screws from falling out and into the intake, if you do not grind the peened section down you will break the head off or strip it.

If this came of a running.car count how many turns out your idle mixture screw is so you can put it back where it was .Careful when seating the mixture screw just tighten until it just touches,you don't want to damage the needle,or the base plate. Go to a music store get all the clippings they'll give you from when they string guitars,they are helpful for cleaning jets,passages etc. Use some common sense don't force or gouge anything. Also the bulb for cleaning baby noses is handy for blowing through passages or creating suction on diaphragms.

I use an old retired "Cookie sheet" or sheet pan or baking tray, or whatever they're called too. I use them for working on anything with drippy fluids or small parts.

ok guys - got the carb off with a lot of pictures - of note only two mounting bolts were present and they were just hand tight. looks like gaskets only have two holes so do I punch/drill them out when I replace them?

Also - cannot figure out how to remove this choke linkage piece. I thought I had to rotate so the little nub would come out via the little slot - but no luck

You have too loosen the screw that holds the fast idle cam. Then you can unhook the linkage.

Thanks - I was looking at that and the screw looks out of place to me so I wasn't sure if that was the answer.

I bought the rebuild kit from Mike's and downloaded the directions but didn't go far enough to find the videos. But right there was the answer!

You're welcome. I tried finding the videos from their website, that's how I knew they existed, I found them a few years ago, but it appears they did a site "upgrade" since then. Tried youtube and found them.

the left idle mix screw looks good - but the right one was definitely doing the hula as it came out. Can I reuse and then replace later
