What type of transmission

Hello every one

Spending time with my shift lever housing wobble I had a look at the linkage, too.

What I expected to see is linkage like this from a you tube video

My Google capabilities are poor enough to not finding an explanation.

Can some one tell me what three on a tree I have here?

At all pics I found so far the two links are equally long and face to face. With mine the one link is a) longer than the Other and b) it is angled.

I never saw a pics showing that like what i have.

That brings me to the point. Always thinking that were a saginaw, Is it or is it not? Does the linkage give a clue at all?

Bringing up the follow-up topic. Not that I need to align the linkage, it works just fine, but preparing for it. What is the procedure? Apparently the videos showing the how to do it work with a colar that changed the distance between the levers R&1 and 2&3. That colar is not there, making me think the alignment is different?

I would bet your adjustments are at the transmission end. IDK but I wonder if it's possible that your rods were put on upside down?

I wouldn’t worry about what pics show unless you’re absolutely sure it’s a square body.

That first pic (with the hand) shows brake line fittings pointing straight down, that’s not a square body master cylinder.

Compare apples to apples.

well, that picture is of a video explaining how to adjust the linkage on a late 60s c10. Word is however, for what I did read, that this column shift linkage is the same for all those years including squarebodys.
In fact, I didn´t find a picture specifically for a squarebody linkage and the shop manual is also very unspecific to me.

I would bet your adjustments are at the transmission end. IDK but I wonder if it's possible that your rods were put on upside down?
now that would be something.

isn´t there a member with a column manual that can check under his/hers hood what it looks like?

I'm still betting the only difference is you adjust the length of the arms at the transmission instead of at the base of the column. LOOK at the side of the transmission. Do you see adjustment provisions?
Edit. I haven't messed with adjusting a 3 on the tree in over 40 years,but here's what I'd be doing. Look and see if you have adjustment provisions at the transmission,I'm betting you do. Take the shift rods of off the transmission arms. Adjust my clamp collar at the column. Align my column linkage an use an Allen wrench left in place to hold the levers aligned. Go back under the truck put both my shift levers I'm neutral,adjust my shift rod lengths until I can put the linkage back on the transmission levers without moving the column levers or the transmission levers. This is 90 percent only from common sense,I have almost zero memory of the 3 speed columns.

That's not the type of adjustment that is on the older columns. They have an adjustment specifically for selector/shift lever interface. When the levers wear down, there can be enough clearance for the selector to bypass a shift lever and bind up the linkage. That's where the adjuster sleeve comes in, to remove all the wear induced slop.

My hunch is that the later columns have an internal tension spring to keep the levers snug to the selector at all times, with no need for periodic adjustment. But, that's just a hunch.

Also, I'm really curious as to what year the adjustment collar went away. There's almost no 3 speed trucks left, so it's not a common sight.

Thanks for the thougts and walk through. Once warmer outside I'll check underneath at the transmission.

Point is however that my has not that colar. And that is where me being puzzled started

I Hope there is someone here with a 3 on tree and a year like mine. To see what that might look like and, once needed, to have some brain to ask for memories. I am thankful the only "trouble" I have seems to be the wobbly shifter housing

If you’re concerned with the different look of the linkage find an exploded illustration from a repair manual (especially an older GM book), they’re usually relatively accurate.
