RFC - Custom SM465 Shift Knob

Request For Comments. Now that I have a 3D printer (thanks Early Santa) it's time to shift my wish list into high gear.

The SM465 shifter in my 84 K30 has an over polished (well used) round knob. No markings. Bor-ing! I shopped for replacements. It's not completely hens teeth. Flea Bay has some used. I was able to find clones as well. But I had another thought. It started with a joke. I tell people it's really a 3-1/2 speed because L is about 2x lower than 1. L's only for slow maneuvers. Never in traffic driving normally. R's a crawler too. That's partly what I love about the SM465. This Granny Tranny is particularly useful for trailer manipulation in tight spots. Don't ride the clutch!

Enough problem space. Onto solution space. My brain isn't afraid to think outside the box. So I cooked up a novel set of markings for the shift pattern. Something that probably never existed before. Or yet for that matter. As I haven't printed my custom knob yet. I wanted to shop it around first. It's posted on Printables here. So, how sick is that?

Make sure you choose your filament wisely. PLA is a favorite of newbies because it prints pretty nicely and is easy to setup. But it doesn't do temp changes well and gets sloppy under constant use. Saw a video several years ago of someone making a shift knob and the PLA one didn't hold up.

Agreed. My 3d printer came with small samples of PLA, just to get started. I bought regular rolls of PETG and printed other stuff. So far, so good. Especially after adding a textured print sheet to the kit.

Love it! I think there might be a 3D printer under the tree for me, and I was just thinking about that very idea yesterday but for the NV4500 going in it. Thinking L-1-2-3-OD (the circle around the D) or CRWL-1-2-3-OD or something, but I like your "0.5"...

I've always been a fan of the mushroom head vs a ball for a truck, probably from the old truck with the 435 in it that I drove a lot growing up. But otherwise, I love it!

I do a lot of 3d printing, I would recommend ASA. I have some stuff in PETG that I am using and then most of it in ASA. Here is my latest multi color print in PETG.

That silver PETG looks better than I would expect. Good to know! There may be an MMU in my future. Meanwhile, my projects so far and all black or all clear. So far, so good. Whereas ASA seems like splippery scope. In addition to enclosure, filaments, build plates. Someday, maybe...

I had a cheap enclosure for my old Ender 3, now I have a k2 plus because I wanted a heated enclosure and largest bed for that price range. Feel free to ask questions if you have them.
