I'm running 285/75R16s. I think they look pretty good!

Thank you Those are 15 x10 modular chrome rims I’m not sure who makes those ones. Us wheel has some modular 97 rims identical and cragar has a similar version. They were on the truck when I purchased it 4 years ago. They have Mickey Thompson center caps on the back but I can’t find any Mickey Thompson chrome rims that are similar

Nice. Thanks to all for pics. Here are first glimpses. Maybe the rears would look good up front, too. I was thinking the fronts were going to stick out more than they do now.

What size tire did you end up buying for the steelies?

my 1986 3/4 ton came to me with its factory rims with factory spec tires.
I pulled one off the side of the truck to look at a brake,

so a 1986 16" steelie with a LT 235/85r16 with a 2022 Walmart Mastercraft
(tires like new still, last owner drove very very little) such a combo weighs 73lbs
(as per my bathroom scale with me holding it)

handy: for comparison ... a 2002 factory spare GMC 1500 truck rim (a loose turd to hold tarps down).
16" steelie, with its factory Firestone Wilderness P265/70r16. weighs 60.5lbs. (yes a passenger tire,...but its what I could get my hands on,...and also never use on the road)

I can't get hold of any of my loose 16/17" alloys this minute. to see what they come up as.

but,...if I were to be tooling around in this truck I would want something lighter with less spinning force and easier to stop such a lumbering giant.

like a 2008 GMC factory alloy 17" rim or a aftermarket alloy with looks of the period /
with matching 13+" brakes that can't fit under a 16" rim.

and some tire with more of a contact patch. (make a better bite on the road) edit: the 1986 is about 7" wide on the tire face,...and leaves a print about 6" wide. ...the 2002 has a whole extra inch on those numbers with just a basic factory 1500 tire size.

if anyone is looking to swap between vehicle brands and years. here is a website. (its world wide, but pretty good for coverage vs. other things) https://www.wheel-size.com/
I think the same lug pattern goes up to 2009 for 6 and 8 lug. "think = ET17 for 2500" and on that site its for a suburban 2500.

but that is probably going to be something for the next owner to ponder.
...what I got is Original like it was for a 2wd 3/4 ton 350 engine.
...with 160 of fighting hp. :Jedi:

I don't think you can compare a 3/4 ton 86 wheel to a 2002 1/2 ton wheel for weight.....apples and oranges

These are 31s. Right after putting new Bilsteins on it (PO had blown shocks so they needed replacing). I don’t love the fender gap with these, probably need a 33 to fill it decently.

well, it was just a point of open discussion for those looking for better choices

I just happened to remember to pull out the bathroom scale, while washing the sweat off my head, before bolting it back on.

and I was just looking on tirerack for what they list for 1986, they do let you sort rims by weight. (not tires sort by weight)
(a light 16" American racing outlaw ii = 19.3lbs, and a random cooper discoverer at3 LT in the factory 1986 size = 43lbs. ...so ~64lbs with balance weights)
I wish they would let you see the 17" by putting in a 1986,...but their database for old things is not like the new selections with plus 1"-plus 2")

edit: sorting on a 2008 gmc 2500 yields better results for those looking for 17", some 25lbs rims.
(and sad the bulk come from China, ......and I remember local guys that made such things at a aluminum miling plant....typically was culvert pipes but still "local"...before they moved the whole operation to Mexico...which probably lost it to china now).

I have always run 235 85r16 load range E on my 40 year old K20 Suburban. The tires that were on it when I bought it 31 years ago were super crappy so I replaced them with Goodyear Workhorse Extra Grip's at the recommendation of a co-worker. This was the tread pattern.

Never had any issues ever, great traction off road, in snow and ice. Great tires. I went through five sets between '94 and 2009, drove a lot of miles in those years.
I needed a new set of tires in 2009 when I was transferred back to Texas. Nobody in Las Vegas had these and found out they had been discontinued. So I got a set of some kind of Goodyear "they" said was the replacement. Didn't like em. After they wore out, replaced with some Coopers (Ok, kind of), BFG's (not so good), another set of Coopers and in May they needed replacement.

Looked and looked for decent tires and found some recently introduced Yokohama's, the Geolandar A/T XD. They looked sorta familiar. Load range E, made for commercial use, kinda like the Goodyears I really liked. They work great in the West Texas Gnarliness. Really happy with them.
