As I have been contemplating all if this....i still don't understand how a 1/2 ton Burb can have a 700r4 with no issues
But a 3/4 ton Burb with a built 700r4 and a trans cooler isn't a good idea....
Sorry guys if I'm getting on your nerves just curious

Dude a built and properly cooled trans will do. Most don't have a cooler and don't keep up on fluid and fuller changes. Two key things... I change the trans fluid every 12k in all my vehicles. Do this and drive worry free :)

It's all about opinions. Do as you see fit FOR YOUR SITUATION. Just know that the 700r4 is nowhere near as strong as the Th400 and not near as dependable. I'm likely to be going with a 700r4 in my C20 pick up with a 454. I'm only doing it because I have an itch to try something different and OD would cool, but I also build transmissions so when mine breaks it's not going to cost me $1500, more like $300 maybe more depending the upgrades I put in it and how bad it was tore up when I start the build.

Those 1/2 tons do have issues. When I was Burb shopping about 10 years ago (a lot of them around still then), there were a lot of them for sale with a bad trans around the 120-130K, and most of them over that were advertised as having a rebuilt trans. IMHO, that's not very good durability even for a stock Burb.

I have a good cooler and a properly built trans with about every upgrade you can throw at it. Does it do? Yes, Is it ideal? No. Now to be fair, it does still operate fine after putting a bunch of miles on it. BUT, a lot of those were "pain in the ass" miles having to baby it in the mountains or windy days because it was lugging too much to lock up the converter, causing heat buildup.

I just really think it's a big waste of time and money to swap in an inferior trans, just to gain 1 mpg. The swap will never ever pay for itself. When my 700r4 failed originally, I really wish I would have taken the advice of all the good folks that said to run a th400 in it's place.

If you where having hear issues how could you have the right cooler? Not trying to be a smart... bigger with a fan maybe?

Because the gear/tire/weight combo puts so much strain on the trans, and the converter doesn't like to lock up. My cooler works too well for lower speeds, the fluid never gets very warm at all then. It would be fine with steeper gears, but that defeats the purpose of going with the overdrive trans. Only benefit is better pulling power.

Oh yeah, my original 700r4 died at something like 127K, and that was with the truck still all stock 1/2 ton with 31's and 3.42 gears.

I miss my TH400 :(

Instead of going lower gears im gonna go TH400 and bigger tires.

Good thing I never got rid of my old mule 400.

I honestly cant stand the way this 700r4 shifts half the time. It has some nice spots in 2nd and 3rd but im sick of 1st already and the way it lets go when you take your foot off the throttle in 2nd and it shifts to 3rd.

I have to give it so much throttle bombing around town just to get it going that its defeating the purpose of having it for better fuel economy.

And all that just so I can wait for the day that its a no go in gear. huh. TH400 and bigger tires:)
