I was told by previous owner that this color was made for fire marshals. I've never seen another square in this color, and it is 100% factory original. Well, not anymore, but this is what color it was when I bought it. The previous owner put new doors and hood on it and the color he used was called "Atlas Red," which matches pretty damn well. It's an orangeish-red, more orange than red, though.

I had a dukes of hazzard lunch box, that started in 1979
(which "may" have been a chevy hugger orange, ...or a tnt express color,...or whatever the car supplier whipped up for what they would in the near future need "much" of ...as they wrecked them for our amusement/ sadness)

you should take a look at the paint inside where no sun has ever beaten on to see what it looked like when new.
(so maybe the low dash, or under the dash,...inside the doors ) ...after about 47 years,...looking pretty nice on the outside though.

I found this for 1979 detailing Tangier Orange on 1979 trucks,...although the cardinal red could have lightened up over time to orange....or it got a respray sometime,...or it was just painted originally lighter than the "red" on the card ???

Pic from sometime around 2005 or so not long after my brother bought it

interesting how yours changes color in the sun/ in the garage.

locally I know a guy with a red ford galaxie sunliner 1960 convertible. ...he has taken it to 60 miles one way to a few summertime movie shoots, and the camera crews do not like his red,...so it maybe in one scene shot for short series of takes,...but it changes color too much for them to shoot all day with the sun moving. (...the background people like the car though...so parked or passing by, does not pay much: gets lunch and gas money,...and a day of maybe doing something interesting that hopefully is not a frustrating pain)

looks just like this: (did not want to insert a pick of a 1960 ford red into this thread...although I have seen Ford Reds...on antique GM vehicles)

My 76 High Sierra is code 73 Crimson Red and it looks like that...or did 30 years ago. My 79 Cardinal Red and it is darker than the truck in the pic.

Tangier Orange is definitely ORANGE, we almost bought a truck that color in '78. Saw the Colonial Yellow and decided that was a little bit easier to take.... Still didn't keep the poor truck from getting run into a few times though (we wanted a high visibility color because it was going to be a delivery/shop truck for a business in boomtown Houston). The Colonial Yellow did fade in the sun, to more of a buttermilk shade than the code 53 chip has.

They renamed and changed codes for the same colors 70 / 73 / 5285 and PPG# 2932 are all the same color they changed names and numbers for the same colors at different times due to single stage vs base clear or change of manufacturer/supplier even chemistry changes.

Except... Cardinal Red wasn't an option for '79. I'm tellin' ya, it's a real oddball!
Cardinal red was a standard color for 1979. I own one.

Well I'll be damned, I stand corrected then. If mine is in fact Cardinal Red, they sure did a piss-poor job of naming it; it's not even close to red!

on this page comes up on the motorhome and step van list for 1979 (Cardinal Red #70,..no 2 tone)

so maybe they had it just laying around,..and not in the pre-printed books to use.
as far as red cardinal bird plumage pics from the internet and seeing much variation in color,...I would think its DNA or local present diet would make one more "red" vs. more "orange",...but to me cardinal is not light.
