Hey, side question - is it reasonable to think someone can heli-coil a spark plug hole on an Asian aluminum head?

Super common fix for Toyota 22R & RE...

I've never done the fix myself but from talking with my dad apparently once the fix is complete on the first start up some high revs are recommended to ensure any soft aluminum bits are swept out of the cylinder. This reduces the chance for shavings to end up stuck to the valve seats and cause sealing issues.

Has anyone bought or used the Milwaukee or Dewalt or Stanley mechanic tool sets? Home Depot has some decent looking sets. Need one for Sandy the Tahoe. Usually get Craftsman, but when I saw the other sets, they seem better suited for what I'm looking for, just don't have any working knowledge of those brands

Well Ricko1966, it's not KD, but looks like an exact enough duplicate for the job at hand. Aww man, now I have to do work. <giggle>

@DoubleDingo DeWalt and Craftsman are both owned by Stanley Black & Decker these days, so within reason they are all going to be comparable to one another, some stuff is higher tiered than other stuff (some of what you can find from Craftsman and DeWalt are Facom based, another SBD owned company that are very nice).

I think any of them would do perfectly fine for a road kit, Milwaukee, any of the SBD offerings, Apex (GearWrench, Crescent), Harbor Freight. Thankfully I think the days of the really, really cheap imported tools that only visually resemble what they are supposed to be and have super sharp peeling chrome are long in the rear view mirror.

Craftsman isn't what it used to be, they are okay tools to get you by but quality control has suffered.

I bought my daughter a big set of Milwaukee wrenches for Christmas, they look and feel like quality but no real experience with them. They came in a "packout" box with removable organizers

My small Stanley kit (from Walmart I think) has survived the past ten years in my travel trailer. The tools are pretty cheesy but, would be just fine for travel/emergency tools.

I built a pretty extensive travel kit that stays in my jeep, a lot of it is "Tekton" I ordered from amazon. For the price I have been very happy with everything, I've got a large set of their wrenches that came in a roll, impact sockets and a few other goodies. Tekton has mechanic set for about $270 that looks decent. They sell lots of "Kits" that come in nice plastic organizer cases Etc. Everything else in my Jeep kit was purchased as individual tools over a period of a few years which reduced the strain on my wallet.

What research I've done, the Milwaukee looks like it has some good design features. Pricey, though, especially the wrench sets. I do like the removable trays. I need to go to HD and spend some time with the different kits to compare.

@CalSgt My jeep has a craftsman socket set, pittsburgh wrench roll, and a few screwdrivers under the seat that Ithink are Milwaukee but might be craftsman. Have done tons of work on the jeep with those tools.

Each vehicle gets a tool kit. For Sandy, I had thrown in a socket set from one of the sheds. I've been smelling oil from time to time. Went to check the tightness of the valve covers, and that socket set didn't go small enough, had to rob the set from the 81 since it's a mix of sae and metric.

With the immense improvement in "cheap" tools since the days of chrome coming off and slicing your hands, if I were starting out nowadays, I'd be buying the cheap harboring fright stuff instead of the strap on man. While the convenience of the tools coming to you is nice, it's not 2000% nicer. There are certain special tools you can't get from the scary store, but they seem to be catching up.

I'd agree with that. When I was wrenching professionally, I'd pick and choose specific things off the tool truck I thought were better/more useful than what I could find at HF or HD/Lowe's. My tool truck bill was always minimal. Now, especially just doing it for fun, I buy 97% of my stuff from HF outside of specialty or precision equipment.

When I had my shop , if i needed a new tool for whatever. I would ask myself "how many times you gonna use this"....that determined what grade tool I bought. One time use HF or ?, more use maybe the better stuff
