Chase the wire from the tank up the passenger side of the frame. IIRC the tank wire was supposed to be pink ... Given time & fade, I can see it ( color fade ) as mine is kind of like that.No gas gauge did stop working at some point. We are original owners and although carb has been replaced, dont think it ever had an electric choke on the quadrajet. The wire, in person looks orange, not tan. The holder bracket has been unbolted from somewhere: I dont think it is a ground however. In another thread, it was stated that an orange wire in this approximate location was for a tranny kickdown solenoid? I get no voltage with the key on or when i depress the gas pedal(engine not running) to make me think it is for kickdown, but that may not rule it out from being for kickdown, but it does probably show its not for an electric choke. The wire looks factory. I will keep looking, take some more photos and post. It would be wonderful if it had something to do with gas gauge. The truck has been stolen twice and recovered; steering column had to be swapped out. Not sure when fuel guage stopped working. Some exhaust work was done at the manifold(exhaust gaskets replaced). Truck sat for a few years until I took over from my dad a couple of years back. Im slowly getting it back in shape. Learning as I go. Thank you for your input.

Cruise still works, too - when the handle will cooperate.Oh wow goldie driver: you still have cruise controls in place! My truck came with cruise but when a long block was installed at the dealer way back when, it wasnt working and throttle cabling was subsequently removed(according to dad who never cared for cruise anyway). However i dont see any orange wire in you photos. The connectors along the wire seem factory except the end which is clearly crimped on.

Yeah - that is the one I am referring to.This one correct? Wow that would be so great if i could have a working gas gauge again, its been on the long 'to do' list for awhile now. My dad just told me the gas gauge had been "repaired" at some point so maybe that explains the crimp connector. I'll try and chase this down further this weekend, we've got some decent weather for it coming up.

If it is the gas gauge, when you ground it the gauge should read empty, disconnected the gauge should read fullIf it is gas gauge wire, shouldnt i get voltage on my multimeter when run to ground?
