If you take that pad, and put it on the outboard side of the other caliper the clip will face down instead of up. So when the truck is rolling forward it would be the first thing the rotor contacts (when the pads wear out) instead of the last.

Yes. I believe intention is to face down
The wear indicator..

Look to see if both sides have the indicator facing down.
If the indicator is facing up on one and down on the other, that just means that one indicator is for forwards motion and the other is for reverse motion. :33::happy175::happy175::happy175::happy160:

It means toss that book and get another one of better quality. A shoe is for drum brakes, disc's require brake pads.

If the manual can't get that simple detail correct (difference between brake shoes and brake pads), who knows how much other stuff is wrong...?

This is correct. The indicator should be the first thing in contact. Will it make a difference? Probably not.

The confusion is because some brakes are trailing as in this case which should have it on bottom and some are leading and on the front side of the wheel which would place the indicator on top.

This is on my '65, but it's disc brakes from '73-'87 trucks. Maybe I installed them wrong, but the indicators are in the "push" position. As far as the tabs, I have no idea what that means.

The tabs are just bits of the backing plate that are bent at 90° to the plate that are meant to be crimped onto the caliper on the side opposite the piston. Probably as someone said earlier, as an anti-rattle measure.

I don't recall these pads having those infamous tabs the OP is asking about from the Manual.

Probably varies depending on which brakes you have.
