:gathering:
I'm about to pull the trigger on a $75.00 - 327 crankshaft. The part # is 3941174, it lists as a 68-73 327. 325 stroke. Or I can get a steel one for $100? It's nasty lookin.
SMALL journal 327 cranks were made from '62-'67 and that was before the 350...It goes in small journal 283 and 327 (4 inch bore) blocks.
The medium journal (which I'm interested in) , will drop in a million different blocks and make a million different engines - so I want one? :boti: Your 350 is medium journal, for example.

I ALMOST gave my 267 block away the other day, but I read this article among others TOO SOON. So I kept it. 3.5 inch bore, 350 crank, 5.7 rods...Seems handy? I can build a 250 V8 with the 327 crank that will really scream and be loads of fun, even if it hangs out for a spare engine = with 3.4L (60°) L-82, v6 pistons? Is that real?!
Cool! Mega rpm! cheap, right? :Grenade:
So I kept thinkin...
What happens if you drop a 327 crank in a 400 block? HMM! :Whoa:
First I was all about a destroked "377", sure but that was with a 350 crank. (looks at the 267) meh. That crank has a rod wrapped around it.
Medium journal 327 shares the same main bearings.
A 3.0 inch stroke? Still working on that Caprice, it's waiting for me, I've got three truck payments left! Still looking for a 4 bolt, one piece seal block to build, but it's not important ATM. Fidding to rebuild this 400 or create a 250 v8 and put H.O. 305 heads on it. :boobs:
All these parts are gonna make sense one day, stay tuned.
See, if you put a 3.25 crank in a 400 block with spacer bearings, you can EASILY drop in a 6.25 connecting rod and I am all about that! Big bore, long rod / short stroke!
You've heard me say that before....
So whattya think? Yeah yeah, "no replacement for displacement". OK. Great, yawn. I'd rather run 8,000 rpm, I'm not building race trucks, these are drivers.
Drop-in 6.250 rods.I really only want 6.125...So yummy! Off the shelf pistons for 6" rods. Am I crazy? Aluminum heads and 11:1 on 87 octane?
I need another 400 block to play with! I look. I am determined to build the 511 block into a MAF Tuned Port 409. Don't see one of those every day... Think about it! I cannot stop. That's a way safer bet for that 4 bolt block. Slow speed 80,000 foot pounds and it suuuure would be cool! And easy to burn out all 4?

Yeah baby! Destroke the 267!!!! - Happens every day. 250 is a straight 6? Wtf? Put it back in the Blue Ox!!!!! Lol.
Man that's cool. A 250 v8 in an old square!

:greenchainsaw:

Thoughts? Experience with off the wall builds? You're not all about a 250 V8?

A 262 crank? 4.3L V8! Alternate 302 crank for a 2 piece block...
Neat 311 from a 350 block. I wonder if it's possible to "offset grind" that to a true 3.00 stroke? That would save me having to buy a whole car + another block! Hmm... .10" stroke is NOT a deal breaker. Looks like it needs more radius, them edges appear sharp!

Well in 1967 chevy released the 302 in the Camaro it was a 327 block with a 283 crank 202 heads and a solid cam. in 1969 chevy designated it as a DZ eng and it was rated 290 hp for the ins.co. but would put out around 400 hp. and would turn 8000 rpm at the drop of a hat . I had one in the 80s that I took over sea's with me on a tender ( repair ship ) I was on it was a floating machine shop . so I had the crank balanced , put H beam rod's balanced and 30 over pop up floating wrist pin's that was balanced . port matched the intake to the heads as we ported the heads . put a set of roller rockers on and cut down a set of big block 7/16 push rod's . put a dejeted 750 holley on it and put it on the dino in the diesel shop for brake in and spun it up after about 10 hours of run time .at that time it put out 524 CHP . So you can mix and match parts and get a monster of a mouse motor with a little time and playing with deferent parts . I had 6 months to work on my 302 .just have fun

thanks Rusty, learn something new every day. I'd read on stroking an engine just because it's all over the place and everyone likes to do it. I'd heard of de-stroking, but never put any thought to it.

The 3.4 is *Not an "L82", but I can't edit. Correctly called an "LA1". The DOHC engine is different.

I have had ZERO luck trying to find "267" pistons for less than $550, custom made = NO!
That's gonna make or break this idea. Need option. Ye old 267 still seems like a good place to start destroking engines....
Maybe a mid 90s 3.4L Camaro piston is the correct size? Wrist pin and everything?! Even the Ch is good with a steel shim head gasket? 1.4 inches, something... Srsly?!
EXCEPT they connect to the Camaro rods if a funky way. OK. So? Can I run freaking Z34 rods or somethin? PLEASE BE AT LEAST 5.7 inches long!! @bucket you got any 3.4L knowledge?
I read they are extremely strong factory pieces and that 2.8L rods do NOT interchange... (different small ends).
Reckon I'll run by the Camaro yard tomorrow and see if I can put a 3.4 piston and rod in my hand, this one ain't gonna fix.
:(
Ya know, for testing purposes.... ;) Plus you guys think it's nuts and that makes me want it even more.
I think the big ends are even the same. (close enough - nothing the right bearings can't fix.)
There actually IS a market for hotrod 3.4 pistons so maybe some flattops are not out of the question !
AND
There was a 1.74 intake valve "416" head made. Awwww ****! :poop:

That would fit a 3.5" bore much better, yes? Single pattern cam for real!
1.74-1.84 who cares anyway? It's lookin like a 50℅ 60°v6 hybrid. Heads, pistons, rods. IT WONT DIE. Gets better and better. I'll start tearing engines down pretty damn quick. Trying to figure out how to get the 400 in my living room...
[yt]fk_IkF4tvRc[/yt]
.
It may take all night to gather the next piece of info regarding the rods, there is not a load of info easy to find.

Lolwut.
3.1?!

Oh geez.

Called Jegs. **** around!

Keith Black # 3459HC1.5MM. <3

$42. Each?! Efffff.
Dude told me to call back during regular business hours and THEY could call around and get a better price for my " '92 3.1 RS Camaro"

Found a $100 set of 6 that crosses to an ISUZU number. Oh yeah, I need 8...****. looking them regular ass wrist pins!

Is that hot or what?

Not quite as radical as your ideas, but I've always wanted to build a 377 with 400 bore and 350 stroke, using off-the-shelf pistons and rods.

Because of the large 4.155 bore, you can use 2.05, or maybe even bigger valves w/o shrouding. And the 3.48" stroke with 6" rods would mean no 383-type "monkey motion", no block or rod clearancing, and no pin bore through the lower ring land.

I'm 99% sure that 3.4 DOHC, 3.4 SFI/TBI and 3400 all used the same rod. It was just compression height that was different.

Ooh.
All of this information is terrible difficult to decipher. Not only do I have ZERO previous knowledge, it is not easily found in say, one place.
@MikeB I promise I'm not trying to be radical but I am unwilling to drop almost 600 bucks on 3.5 inch custom pistons for an engine I'm mostly playin around with only because I can. SO, a cheap alternative is required or I'm wasting my time and a lot of it! It took me all day to figure out 3 1 not 3.4!
I get a great deal on used Camaro parts, so it makes fast sense to start there...
The 327 crank makes a TON more sense to me than a 350 crank because it makes a super long rod possible super cheap - no clearancing monkey business and I am ALL ABOUT long rods . Primarily to lessen cylinder side-loading ,to increase dwell time, to aid horsepower production, increase engine life, reduce octane sensitivity (allow higher compression), etc, etc.
1.75:1 is the ratio I'm after. In a 400, that requires a 6.125 rod SO, that is the basis for MUCH of my thinking.
Hmm. A 327 crank will add Ch and keep my pistons from wobbling! Away we go! Ever read any of Smokey's books? That guy was a ******* genius. R.I.P.

Plus, I'm such an ******* I want so focking far away from "vortex heads" and "383" that I can't hardly stand it. IDGAF what the outcome is, as long as it's not that. I WANT RPM. I love that chainsaw sound!

There are so many possibilities with a small block Chevrolet!
Cookie-cut deez nuts .

I look forward to the opportunity to help somebody else start to think about things differently. Maybe some young kids are watchin.
So **** it, play NWA. trololol like they haunt around in "tech discussion".

Lmmfao@ 3.1 pistons....Will it work? ****, that's CHEAP.

3.504 is the correct diameter.

What if it works? We'll be famous! :D

I need to take the 267 apart and make sure it's okay. I blew it up - on flat tires - it'LL be okay...I used to ride it around.... ;)

I don't know the rod lengths. But I also think the 3.1 and 3.4 share the same stroke (and rods). The 3.4 has a larger bore than the 3.1 motor.

And the 3.1 shares a bore with the 2.8, it's just different strokes.

There was the non-VVT 3.5 used in cars like the Malibu, I don't remember where the extra displacement came from... but I'd bet it was the bore.

That information is very elusive.
Why!?
I HAZ INNERWEBZ.
wtf.

I emailed the 327 crank guy from Craigslist and told him I'd buy it if I can find pistons for my project. He offered to help and asked me what I am looking for.
I told him and haven't heard back. Lol.

I've determined to get a STEEL one to put in a 400, not cast.
Am I re-tard to have ACTUALLY thought there MIGHT be someone ELSE here with experience in obscure cubes?
It's okay, I'll be that guy. That guy turning 7,000rpm out of a 250 V8 in a 3/4 ton Fleetside.
That's fine.
Whatever.

2.8 and 3.1s use same piston and stroke, 3.4 is a bigger piston.
The 3.1 connecting rod is?! FORGED 5.7 inches. Rated to 7k rpm.
Wtf. Pull the other leg! Nope, it's true.
Different (smaller) main AND rod ends though which really brings me down.
Now working to determine the wrist pin connection/lock/keeper thingy, I have in mind it's not a typical SBC deal. How can I make the rod ends fit? LoL.
