My opinion isn't worth anything, but you can have it. What you did wrong was not selling it at $15k. Too many issues at that price. There's quite a few pics that are

Yep, unfortunately you should've taken the 12-15k when you had the chance. Putting on BAT with all those closeup pictures unfortunately is where you went wrong.

Don't take this as being rude, you asked for opinions and this is what I see: It's a longbed (shortbeds regularly sell in the mid-teens), MAACO quality respray in a non-original color, lots of dings and dents all over the truck, bed floor is pretty beat (truck has been worked hard), brake pedal says 209k miles, needs the seat redone, dash pad is cracked up. Essentially, it's a worn old truck. It's a great starter truck that hasn't been screwed with much, but it's also not a hard to find version of these trucks. The number one place where you messed up was painting it. As it sat with the original gray/red on it, I would've been glad to pay $6-7k for it depending on how it ran and drove. With that cheapo paint job (and unfortunately, shiny paint just further highlights the body issues), I honestly wouldn't even be interested in the truck if I were shopping.

Yeah, you should have sold it for 15k, but it's a solid 7.8k. I'm stuck in old price land, and to me 7.8k is the max I would pay. I like the dings, those are war wounds, and it's fairly straight besides a few war wounds. I personally like the original paint better than the respray. Sad to see you sell it, that explains why it's no longer your avatar, I've been meaning to ask why it was gone.

The whole "what's my truck worth" thing stresses me and confuses me. Geography plays a big part, the quality of the vehicle even more so.

I sure don't want to hurt anyone's feelings about their vehicle but let's do an honest evaluation here. And before anyone does get their feelings hurt, this is based on what I know about the market, not my personal feelings about these trucks.

These are the immediate strikes against your truck.

Paint is rough, very dull in places. Looks a lot like a rattle can paint job in the pics.
NOT the original two tone paint scheme.
Didn't bother to repaint the inside door jambs to match the new black exerior color.
Seat is torn in several places.
That rug thing over the dash that indicates the dash is probably cracked all over.
305 engine.
Long bed 2wd.

The '87 TBI can be a plus or a minus depending on the buyer.

I would think $15K would be a pretty fair offer and probably higher than average. A square body from the '80s has to be in pretty wonderful shape to command a high price.

Was looking for at minimum 12.5k, hoping for 15k. Highest bid was 7.8k, well under the 12k offers I get on marketplace when asking 17k. Had several people come by from marketplace serious around 15k but I was kind of holding out to see if anyone was dead set on it.

What’d I do wrong?

My immediate thought is that you went wrong by offering it for sale with no reserve. You had valid local offers at $15k, so you should have set a $15k reserve at a minimum. If it doesn't sell at that or higher, then you can always go back to the local offer.

Personally, that is a crazy price for an 87 with a 305 and 700R4. I think the $7-8k is a reasonable price, $15-17K is crazy prices. As others have stated, it is in good condition, but not great condition. Dinged body with a poorly done black paint job does not increase value.

Thanks for the feedback all and anyone else. I never actually had anyone offering $15k but several people reached out interested to come test drive at that price. Had two test drives but they never pulled the trigger. I’ve got probably 10 dms in marketplace at or over $12k and honestly thought it would bring more on BAT.

Good lesson learned. Wish I wouldn’t have spent money to get it sell ready but you live and learn

One funny thing is everyone is saying poorly done but I’ve had two people who do body work for a living saying it’s the best paint job they’ve seen out of maaco
This maaco paint job isn't so bad either....

I'm not sure I'd take that as a compliment. It's like saying that someone has the best smelling farts out of any of the farts they've ever smelled.

Paint is 99% about the prep work. Maaco doesn't really do any prepwork... so if someone does all the sanding, bodywork, and prep before taking it into Maaco, they are likely to get a fairly decent looking paintjob.

Glad you didn't have to sign a contract and are not obligated to actually sell the vehicle. I hope you get what you are looking to get out of it

Which ones in particular?
Pictures 18, 21, 29, 58, 62 and 86.

None are deal-breakers for buying a truck, but those bring it down into the sub-10k territory for me. To spend $15k on a 87 2wd with a mediocre respray, everything else has to be mint.

Im not tryin to be a dick and i didnt read all the responses but i would never auction my truck at no reserve.... idc how rough or used she was, if you have a number in your head, set it! If it dont go then try again later, but you didnt lowball lose your truck and have to deal with that.

@TX87R10 I actually like your truck, I think it's a great truck and I wasn't criticizing the truck. I was answering the question and giving you honest feedback on why it didn't bring more money.

The funniest part of the negatives is "2wd Long Bed". The fact is that the 2wd long beds were the most popular, they sold more of those than any other configuration. That was the most popular setup back then. Now everyone wants a short bed. While I agree that the short beds look a little more sporty, the long bed was the better, smoother riding truck and was what most of the 2wds I drove and rode in back then were.

We never had a 2wd after 1977 so when I started shopping for a Square Body I naturally looked for something similar to what Dad had back in the day. We needed a short bed because in the woods the turning radius was so much better.

I think it would take a lot to make a 2WD Long Bed bring big money. Again, I love those trucks but that is not what the market is looking for, at least not right now. I have seen some pretty spectacular 2WD Long Beds on BAT that didn't bring significant money.

Being realistic here...If you were to have the truck repainted back to it's original colors, if the dash were replaced, if the seat was re-upholstered and IF it was all done perfectly...You would still have a truck worth less than $20K.

Take a look at this superb example that sold on BAT back in June of this year. This truck is pretty darn close to original and is about as close to perfect as you could find these days.

It sold for $16,750. There were 374 pictures in the ad.

In My Opininon (which is nearly worthless) the only thing you "Did Wrong" was to sell the truck. I think you should have done whatever you wanted to do to it to make it your own and kept it.

But I liked seeing it in your avatar and I like the truck for what it was and the memories of the 1980s its picture brought back to me.

I have been selling quite a bit on CL and FBMP lately. Offers in a chat are pretty meaningless. It can be a giant waste of time. I try to put as much detail as possible so the questions are limited and ask when would you like to come see it as early as possible in the chat.

$7800 is about where I’d expect to see it sold, maybe a little high. These aren’t worth what people were paying during Covid. I paid $5k or less for both of our squares.

Just as a price point, my 87 long bed with mostly original paint sold for $25,000 earlier this year. Interior was freshened up, engine (350 TBI) fairly detailed, body straight and solid.
