Truck shuts down...

not sure if I’m in the right forum but I’m pulling into the chic Fila parking lot and the truck shuts down and battery is dead... won’t start back up without a jump. Any ideas?? I mean the truck could run if battery is dead and I don’t think it would just shut down if the alternator was bad... if I’m wrong I’m all ears! 87 350tbi

I’m thinking your truck wanted you to get a hamburger instead.

On a more serious note, I’d check alternator output right at the alternator and then see how things are at the battery. It may just be a dead alternator, and it would have died a little bit up the road not right then and there.

We're not going to have any better luck diagnosing something like this over the internet than you are standing at the hood.

I think it may be your leaking halogen fluid onto the alternator belt or maybe the e.g.r. filter is clogged...or maybe the truck wanted pizza. Does she ever like a Big Mac?

But seriously. When was the last time you changed the halogen fluid? Because that can make your alternator overcharge the battery if the belt is too tight. I assume you tightened it using a tensioner gauge? Chances are if it's your alternator failing because the e.g.r. filter is clogged OR BYPASSED, than chances are it killed your battery too , but that's better than hollowing out your catalytic convertor and putting it back on just to pass a visual. When is the last time you checked the tire balance?

Mine did that many moons ago at a Subway.

Got a jump. Guy said you need a ground wire going from the frame to the body.
Added wire from frame to body. End of problem.
