Transmission Indicator

Something broke behind the dash and I no longer have an indicator of what gear the transmission is in. This is on a 83 GMC C2500. How difficult is it to repair the indicator, and what are the usual suspects to break in the indicator? Thanks.

It is pretty easy. There is a tab with a wire connected to the indicator that just clips on the column. You have to take off the bezel to reach everything but once your their, it is a simple job.

Here's what you're looking for. I've had a cable break before, but it could be the orange pointer too.

Is there any way to repair the cable? I opened up the dash last night and just the cable is broken.

I would try to either run some fishing wire through, or try a thin gauge butt connector.

Turns out that I had a spare cable on an instrument cluster that I bought at a car show. However, this cable is the "new style" with a different clip than what is on mine. I tried to open up the little clamp that was holding the remnants of the original cable on the original clip, but the clamping "ears" broke off. In the end I was able to mount the newer style cable clip to the column housing. How is the newer style clip actually connect to the column?
