transmission is supposed to be th400 says 400 on plate on passenger side of trans numbers on bottom of id tag are 17-cl 43491 as best i can make out had a drum brake on trans tail shaft and has th400 oil pan is this a th400 or something else

Sounds like a TH400 to me. If you want a better identification, pics help a lot.

If the two big letters on the ID tag are CL that's a TH400 out of a GMC school bus from 1973 or a TH475 from 74-80; The TH475 is identical in appaearance to a TH400 however has straight cut gear sets and, I believe, a heavy duty direct clutch pack (6 frictions) in the drum. Highly sought after for hp/hd builds.

There should be a number showing in the middle of the ID tag which represents the model year. I imagine yours will show a number somewhere between "73" and "80"

thanks guys can you tell me what those numbers mean 17-cl-43491 these are the only numbers i can see on the metal plate on side of trans also theres a big 26 stamped on top of bell housing will try to get picture of metal tag

Are you using "talk to text"?

As far as the numbers are concerned, one represents the year while the other is a serial. Please quote this post when you reply otherwise i wont be notified.
