my transfer case don't want to go in to low it shifts to nuetral and high lock just fine but it won't move past nuetral to go in to low. Can anyone tell me what would make this happen or what i should check for. i unhooked the linkage just to make sure it wasn't just jammed up but it does the same rite at the transfer case. im not sure what transfer i have but the transfer case and th400 trans is out of a 79 scottsdale that i just put in the GMC.

Get some pics of the t-case so we can tell you what it is. The Np205 has large needle bearings on the synchro and if it has dropped any of those it may not shift freely. Since you say hi-loc that tells me it is an NP203 though. It could be the same situation though, or the manner in which you're trying to shift it. Are you trying in neutral, park, running or off?

Yeah that's an NP203. Try shifting it in neutral, or even with the engine off. The one I drove with a 203 was a real bitch to shift too.

Ok thanks thats good to know. I thought they were supposed be in neutral but I have been trying it in neutral, park, running and not, my hand, my foot, cussing, hollering, yelling and bitching.

The one I drove wouldnt come out of 4-Lo unless you put it in reverse, rolled backwards a little, bump the trans shifter into neutral and quickly try to shift the t-case. I hated it. You may want to check all the bolts holding the t-case to the trans adapter and check the oil level too. If all else fails I would say it has dropped some needle bearings from the synchro hub.

Linkage adjust procedure (NP 203):

You must be registered for see images attach

1.Align gage holes in levers (A) and (B) with gage hole in shifter assembly, then insert gage in (J).

2.Position arms (F and (G) in neutral position by placing arms straight down.

3.With swivel (E) and lock nuts (D) loosely assembled to rod (C), rotate swivel until ends of rod simultaneously enter lever (B) and arm (F).

4.Lock in position using retainers (K).

5.Tighten lock nuts against swivel ensuring that position of arm (F) does not change.

6.Repeat Steps 3 through 5 for rod (H), lever (A) and arm (G).

7.Remove gage pin.

Note: the gage pin isn't anything special. It's just to line up the holes and can be a 3/16" drill bit or a 16D nail.

Same thing, NP203. Glad the little tip helped but you may want to check your linkage adjustment as outlined above, it was probably what was wrong with the work truck I was driving that had the same problem but I wasnt the mechanic for the park so I had to just bitch about it and do my trick to get it done. I bet if that truck is still in service it is still doing the same thing.

Terry W,
If you get tired of that old 203
I have rebuilt 203 with a lock out conversion (front hubs)
low miles on rebuild
I have the lock out front hubs too
