74 C10 350 TH350. Stock (original) engine. Upgraded OEM points distributor to HEI. I removed coil, cap and wires. Turned harmonic balancer mark to 0. Checked where rotor was pointing before removing old dist. It was pointing to #6 plug. From info I have found, it should point to #1. Installed HEI and set rotor to point to #1 and would hardly run with dist turned all way counter clockwise. Is this a timing issue with cam and crank?

No, you just misunderstood something about the timing mark.
The crank turns twice for every revolution of the camshaft. So with the balancer mark on 0, the rotor will point to 1 OR 6.
You should have put the distributor in pointing to 6. Now you are 180° out.

So I set mark to 0 again, reset dist to point to #6 and it will be ok? Then set initial timing with light?

It needs to be timed on compression stroke, pull #1 spark plug, put a finger over the hole and rotate the engine till you feel pressure, keep rotating to TDC, put the distributor in with rotor pointing to #1 plug wire.

It takes two complete revolutions of the crankshaft to complete the 4 cycles.. To put it a bit different.. Firing order from"0" timing mark.. for SBC is first crankshaft revolution: 1 8 4 3... Back to "0" timing mark, second crankshaft revolution: 6 5 7 2.... Once the distributor is installed properly, you can set ignition timing by connecting the timing light to #6 or #1 spark plug wire.. Both come to TDC simultaneously, one is at the top of the compression stroke, ready to fire while the other is at the top, finishing the exhaust stroke and beginning of the intake stroke.

There..... That oughta really muddy up the pond... lol...

The easiest thing to do, if you haven't pulled the distributor out again already, is to turn the rotor pointing position 180°.
You can put the timing mark on zero.
Check the rotor position, 6 or1, and then carefully pull the distributor up enough to clear the gear, and point the rotor the exact opposite direction.
The oil shaft should still be aligned if you didn't move anything else.
50/50 chance when the timing mark is on zero. It can only be 6 or 1.
