Tie Rod End Size

Looking at replacing my tie rod ends and ordering the parts from Rock Auto. I noticed that there seem to be two different options, 7/8 inch x 18 and 1 inch x 18. Are these interchangeable or whats the deal with them? I can't seem to find any information on it.

Is this for 4x4 or 2wd?

1/2 or 1 ton?

@bigcountry78 ordered a tie rod and the ends for his 78 k10 recently
He might be able to point you in the right direction if irs for a 1/2 ton 4x4.

Wasn't it 1"-18 threads you needed??




Or are you asking about a 2wd tie rod? @Jdgrant96

I have an 82 C20 made for the 83 model year.
When the time came for me to rebuild the front end, I stupidly assumed parts for an 83 would fit.
I was wrong !!
Seems the 82 used the larger diameter heavy duty parts.
They are most certainly NOT interchangeable........ MUST be the correct size, so measure what you have to verify you get the correct parts.

They are not interchangeable. I needed 1”x18, and I ordered from rock auto. You need to check yours beforehand to verify what you need. Otherwise you do like I did the first time and get the wrong size. Mine was for a 1/2 ton 4x4, 2wd may be different. Rock auto lists the thread size, just be careful and check before you order. I got the right size tie rod, and the wrong size end. When I checked the order slip, I had goofed and ordered the wrong end. Totally my fault.

If you have a short tie rod, a short sleeve and a really long tie rod, then you have the 1".

If you have two short tie rods and a really long adjustment sleeve, then you have the 7/8".

I appreciate the replies, forgot to mention what I've got. It's and 84 K10, I suppose the would make it 1/2 ton? I believe its a long tie rod with two short ends if I remember correct, I'll have to go look in a minute. I'll snap a picture while I'm at it

You can replace the 7/8" setup with the 1" if you order both ends and the sleeve and clamps. It's a little stronger and a heck of a lot easier to set the toe in.

No adjusting sleeves, the ends screw right in to the rod.

Yep, that's the 7/8" tie rod. Like was said, it's best to replace it all and be done with it. And at that point, it's best just to upgrade to the 1" setup. I bought Moog stuff for that whole setup on rock auto last year and it was very affordable.

And technically, that center rod is the adjustment sleeve.

If you look in the old parts books they specified the 1" tie rod for 4.10 and lower gears. Maybe something to do with the extra torque trying to increase the toe-in on acceleration?

Not doubting you at all, but my 1/2 ton had the 1” setup from the factory.
