hello,
the previous owner installed new outside door handles. from what i can tell there is a metal clip that secures the rod to the handle. gm is suppose to still sell them. by looking at a schematic from gm i can't make out what it is or it's not shown. i bought a set of clips from gm but were wrong. does anyone have the gm part number for these or know where i can get them.
thanks,

Try this. Straight from my GM parts manual. Oh by the way it is not shown in the GM parts catalog

On the 81-87 model years (that's all I know about), there is no clip at the handle end. The rod end is pressed out to a larger diameter. The rod is inserted through the slot on the end of the button arm, and that flare allows the rod to be pulled up:

The lower end of the rod is attached to the latch linkage by a clip (not shown in any dwgs), that slides on and it secured by twisting 90 degrees:

Classicparts.com sells this clip. For some reason they do not show it as applicable to the 78-87 model years. But, it looks exactly the same and is listed within the 1973-1987 door parts group - I think it is a data base error:

From everything I remember, mine have all used the metal clip that slides on. They can often be found at auto parts stores or hardware stores.

i found the clips that go on the actual handle. in the bottom of the door. the 2 clips i bought are the ones that holds the rod to the latch which i neede also.

Good deal on finding the clips. That's were they almost always are - down in the bottom of the door.

FWIW, I just found a couple of good images showing the upper clip. I never pull the rod out of the slot so they didn't seem familiar :

Had to purchase some of these today. Local GM parts guy used the older # above and updated it to #12338100. I got the last ones out of Montreal, but that # is good on eBay etc.
