TH400 acting oddly

Look into doing the TH400 dual feed modification. That’s the only advantage to using a TransGo shift kit, and it’s only an advantage if you don’t plan to remove the trans. Your trans probably has a blue 1-2 accumulator spring, replace it with a yellow from a earlier 400, or a orange from a 4L80 trans. Use 2 horseshoe shims on the pressure regulator valve, that will give you about 160-170 line pressure, enough for 800hp easy. Replace the rear thrust washer and shim with a bearing and shim from a TH350 pump, that solves the case bushing walkout problem. Set the intermediate clutch clearance with snap rings from a 518/618 Chrysler trans. They are drop in replacements, are the same snap ring included in the TransGo shift kit, and are available in thickness of .066-.106 thick. Ideal is about .050-.060 clearance. Drill the spacer plate feed holes to whatever your desired shift quality is, and you duplicated the TransGo kit for about 10 bucks.

So I called a transmission shop a couple days ago and asked them if they'd sell me a filter with the brass filter media. They won't sell parts. However, they directed me to a transmission parts vendor. I called them up, they didn't have one, but it being a $5 item, they just ordered it without me needing to come in and pay first. Yesterday I went and picked it up. While I was there I asked how much for a torque converter. $118. In stock. I also inquired about a rebuilt kit. $134. NICE! I'll be getting my stuff locally and saving money too. Now I know where to get transmission parts for my rigs.

Dropped the pan today to install that new filter with the brass filter media. Pan didn't have any more material than it has the other times I dropped it. That's good news. The fluid is a nice bright red now. It should be, three drain & fills in a few month length of time.

With the brass filter installed the pump whine seemed to go away. On the test drive I dropped it into 1st at a light and ran up the rpms before shifting in to 2nd. No whine. Same thing 2nd to 3rd.

Will still be rebuilding this trans, but it's on the back burner until October-ish.
