Hi Team,

can someone please advise if the teflon oil seals on the piston are interchangable with the metal seals?

I thought I had an easy fix on my hands when I spotted an oil leak from the accumulator cover. I aquired new piston seals and O rings (2 sizes) for the cover and a new spring, because the one installed was broken in 3 pieces.

I went out, put it all together,(not installing the O ring on the cap, but setting in its channel in the tranny, as I learned here!), fired up blue thunder, and watched her vomit dexron from the cover,(3 times).

The smartest thing I did today was walk away! I will now ponder this with the aid of beer.

what am I missing?

Patrick

Why did you not install the o-ring on the cover? That is why it leaked fluid. And yes the teflon seals and steel rings are interchangeable. You may want to check the bores for gouges or grooves since your spring was broken.

I see what you mean...
That is how is should be done right? Only makes sense doesn't it??? Well that is WRONG !!! DO NOT PUT the O-Ring over the cover.
But the next post outlined putting the seal actually in the groove in the bore, then install the cover. I had actually put mine on the cover and was able to get it installed without the pinch, but I guess if you run into that you can do it the other way. But it definitely needs the o-ring, either way.

10-4

I installed it 3 times, and got puked on each time.

I picked up 2 sizes of the cap O ring and tried both sizes, same result.

I also got teflon as well as metal piston seals, maybe I'll try the metal seals tomorrow. there were tefon seals on the piston to start with so I stuck the teflon ones back on.

I checked the bore and it is not gouged.

Was there anything else going on with the trans to make you start checking it out? What's the specs, as far as a shift kit or anything? I'm wondering if a valve in the valvebody is sticking, causing high line pressure on that circuit.

no, nothing strange. no shift kit, fresh fluid and filter over the summer. it had a slight weep at the cover. it also shifts early but I just adjusted the tv cable and think that should take care of it. I'm gonna go out and see if I can get that cover on without leaking, fingers crossed!

will advise,

thanks for the input!

a little backround on the truck. http://www.gmsquarebody.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5430

O.K., I am a failure...

with the help of my son, after inspecting, cleaning and reassembling the accumulator, he turned the key as I watched the cover and was thrilled to see no leak. about 1 minute after I proclaimed our success it started leaking. not as bad as yesterday, but steadily leaking. on the up-side it did hold for 60 seconds.
back to the drawing board.

It is difficult to get the seal to stay in place if you put it in the case's groove, it is likely to push into the case out of the groove. It is also difficult as you saw in HRPC's writeup to keep it from getting pinched if you try to install the cover with the o-ring in the cover. Try lubing the o-ring and the case with transgel or vaseline. Sounds like you almost had it!

will do, for the record I did lube the case and O ring, I guess I'll go do battle with it again.

Thanks for your help!

I'm on my 3rd Stella, (in the fancy glass and everything), celebrating getting the accumulator cover on with no leak finally. test drive revealed the shift points much improved after adjusting tv cable.

Thanks for your help!
