I have not yet installed a newer tach into my truck.
Here is the current one that came with it.
I am just the right height to not be able to see it at all when I am driving.

I plan to mount the aforementioned tach on the column as well, but at 2:30ish clock position.
That way I can still see it and all that will be obstructed will be the right turn signal indicator.
I have the black Autogage shown above as well as its chromed version and a Autometer Sport Comp tach to choose from.

The sport comp is a bit to flashy for my truck at this time, so it will be one of the smaller tachs.
I will end up mounting it so when I am at my red line the needle will be pointing straight up.
That way I don't have to look right at the thing to shift, just use the periphery visions...

I do still have it.
Though my son has claimed it for his project truck.
Thanks for the interest though Chris!
Have a swell day.

Where did you mount the tachometer?
Dad had a Sun tach(back in the 70s they were still American made and a good brand) on the '75 Sierra Classic. He took the cup bracket that mounted on the back, and modified it to be at eye level in his peripheral vision, mounted on the A pillar. He cut it, bent it, added some metal in and painted it semigloss dark green. Looked factory!
This was way before the LS and diesel guys had the pillar pod gauges thing going. I wish I had a picture cause it looked really good....
He did something similar on the '78 and the '79 and '84 square body Burbs.

I have used these in several cars over the years.

I have picked them up for $5 to $10 at swap meets as well.
Used this as well, probably would do again if I wanted one that wasn’t in the factory dash. Worked good and I liked the size.

I installed a factory tach from an 84.
Bought the proper housing, harness, and printed circuit from LMC.
Bought a used cluster from eBay for around $100.
Would have used the entire unit but the tabs were broken off.
Used the fuel gauge from the 84.
