after some digging, I found a thread about putting a 86 cab on a 76 frame. the other people said that you have to trim the mounts a bit and use the frame specific mounting hardware. they said it is not that difficult of a swap. but this pertains to a pickup not a suburban. when I search for the topic in google I just get a bunch of other topics rather than the one I need. here is the link to that thread it's on another forum. I know I can't be the only one to ever attempt this project so the answer has to be out there.

You have to use the mounts that match the frame. The front radiator supports are in slightly the wrong spot, unless you want to use the 70's front clip. The front bumper mounting is slightly different. It's all stuff that is easily overcome.

Just my .02. If you really plan on converting to 4WD, yes leaf springs make things easy, but you have a blank canvas so to speak. Make the truck how you want for want you want.

Sometimes spending a little more than planned make the truck so much better. I'd look for a 3 or 4-link setup for the front and make the ride more enjoyable.

Build what you want.

You are on the money. I'm sure some people who see this are thinking why doesn't he just go buy a 4wd, well I'm trying to build the truck I never had when growing up. I got my 88 suburban in trade and I can get this 3/4 ton for little money. so its mostly just my time. im just trying to do my groundwork before i pull the trigger.

If you are gonna keep it on the road then leaf springs are fine. If you wanna wanna build a rig fully capable offroad then go with coils. If I had the money I would definitely choose coils.
