I don't understand the logic in that - if it passes the sniffer and the emissions are within spec, why do they care HOW you get there? There is nothing magical about the original factory parts - that was what they used because that was what was available at the time. It seems counterproductive to disallow using parts that perform as well or better on the pipe sniff if the objective is clean exhaust.

The test only looks at a very specific snapshot in time. The entirety of the emissions system has been through rigorous testing and certification to show that it is compliant to all of the regulations at the time. It is specifically and federally illegal to modify any part of the emissions system. Federally it isn't really enforced and you can usually show that the new part is functionally equivalent to the old part, but in California the only legal way to replace a factory part is with another factory part or an aftermarket part that has a C.A.R.B EO number applicable to your specific vehicle model. Lots of mild intake and exhaust kits are sold with CARB EO stickers just for that reason.

I'd replaced the cat on my 91 Cherokee somewhere around 155k, and before the regulations got as stupid as they are now. 3 years ago my regular smog guy was ill and the dyno wasn't working so the people running his shop couldn't test it. Went to a different shop and was asked when I replaced the cat. I said "around 155k". Apparently that was the wrong answer, they wanted a year. The tech was a strict Asian guy, the owner was more lenient and asked if it was before 2009. Oh heck yeah, it somewhere around '04-'05. The replacement didn't have an EO number, it wasn't a thing when I had it was replaced. About a year ago I had to replace the cat again, this new one is about 2/3 bigger and has the EO number, and listed for $1200! I was able to find one for half, but still, it's a bunch of crap, the same cat without the EO number is about $200.

Edit: The newer giant cat doesn't produce lower numbers on the sniffer, basically the same as before, just a money grab for the elites.

I know California is pretty easy to rag on, and based on many government policies, deservedly so. But since you asked despite the confusing punctuation, here goes it:

Highest mountains in the continental 48, lowest elevation in North America, largest and tallest trees in the world, more snow in the mountains than just about anywhere, more biodiversity than just about anywhere with 13 ecoregions across four biomes, over 3000 miles of coastline, ample hunting opportunities with over 1000 harvestable species, more national parks and state parks than anywhere else, endless outdoor recreation opportunities with a high percentage of public land, the list can go on and on.

But yes, leadership is draconian in many regards and property is expensive relative to some areas (though it’s quite common for household income to exceed $200k/year).

I could live anywhere and have thought about it for one reason or another, but as someone who basically lives outside and loves a wide array of recreation and travel, even as someone who is hyper-conservative (old-school conservative, not neoCON) I can’t think of another place that could fulfill everything I love here.

I think most of the people who truly leave, do so for economic reasons more than simply hating the rules. If you can’t afford it, I can see that. If you can afford it, putting up with the nonsense is just something you do to live in a beautiful place. I hope one day the people in LA and SF will decide they are done with bad policies and the state gets some decent leaders.

@Frankienchevy I completely agree with your post 100% I have traveled all over the world while in the Air Force and moved back home because I love where I live. And there is no substitute. 12 miles to Shasta Lake. Less than 3 hours to the beach. An hour or less to the snow. And I can get lost in the woods from any human in walking distance from my house.

And yes we need new leadership!!

Plenty of shops can do an emissions legal LS swap, you just have to be willing to write the check.

I would think you could find all the emissions parts if you take your time. You can buy an Carb approved intake, and many of the other parts are available new.

How does the smog shop know the engine isnt factory? Put on emissions legal headers or some junkyard manifolds.

If you made a list of all the parts you need, im sure, collectively, folks on this site could find it all in their stashes. I know i have some stuff.

If you have the perseverance to pursue a truck for 30 years...yes I believe you can get all the parts. PIA, yes. I guess all choices are good. Problem seems to be now you have it back, what do you want to do?

Disagree. I grew up in Southern California, spent many summers with family in Sacramento, had and have many family that still lives there... and just can't stomach it. There are many beautiful places in the world, California is not special. I left at 18 to join the Army, came back for a year when I got out, then left for good. I honestly find that it only takes a day or two of being in the state before I start looking forward to getting out of it.

There are many beautiful places in the world, California is not special. I left at 18 to join the Army, came back for a year when I got out, then left for good. I honestly find that it only takes a day or two of being in the state before I start looking forward to getting out of it.

I guess it depends on where you spent your time. Agreed, that the city of Sacramento is not somewhere that I’d choose to spend my time.

California quite literally has nature that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. I’d argue that statement makes it objectively special. Places like Yosemite and old growth Giant Sequoia forests simply don’t exist anywhere else. I don’t know of anyone who’s visited Lake Tahoe or the Eastern Sierras and thought they weren’t some of the most spectacular landscapes God has created.

I drove the lower 48 for work, all the while looking for a new place to call home. My bride and I wondered if we could do better elsewhere. We eventually decided we had it best after all, and left the metro areas off our final list. Between weather and geographic attractions, we decided to stay put. Nothing against visiting other places in the 11 western states but not to call home. Norh western Oregon is it for us. No crazy humidity like the Southeast/Midwest, freezing cold of the northern tier, population density and taxation issues like so many places experience; nope, we're happy.

Except for the tweakers, but they're EVERYWHERE! Had no problems getting the c20 titled, having only a bill of sale and towyard affidavit. Now, to just clean up the goofy politics and all is good here.

They are beautiful and special. There are beautiful, unique, special landcapes all over the united states. You have redwoods, sequoia and giant douglas firs all over the west coast. They are also present in Oregon and Washington. The natural wonders of the state of California just don't overcome all the other bad things to me. My in-laws spent their entire lives in southern California and are finally moving up to Oregon now that they are retiring. They just couldn't do it anymore and almost none of their friends or family live there anymore. Their children got out as soon as they were old enough and realized how nice it was everywhere else, so they didn't go back. They have all given up on the crime, squalor, and massive government taxing for no benefit and moved on.

The unfortunate side effect of that is that they have driven the housing market in the surrounding states up to crazy levels that have actually surpassed the California crazy housing prices in some instances. Housing prices in my area have doubled or more in the last 5 years, at least partially due to all the Californians moving out.
