Steering Wheel Too Close '84 C-10

I find the steering wheel in my '84 C-10 to be uncomfortably close to my chest, even with the seat all the way back.
I can't imagine how shorter drivers even fit behind the wheel........
Short of cutting down or replacing the steering column with an aftermarket part, what can I do to increase the clearance??

Is there a flatter wheel that I can use?

My C-10 has a tilt column..........

I dont know if it is flatter but I use one from a second gen Camaro on both my squares. They are a little smaller in diameter and seem very comfortable to me. I did try an aftermarket one but it was just too small for the truck. It does work well in my Camaro though.

Are you far above average either height or circumference? I am 6’1” 225 pounds and fit easily in my single cab without a tilt wheel. My waist is 33 inches though, so that helps.

I s'pose I am.....6'4" and currently 265...but it was close even when I was thinner...

I've never tried this but this is what I would try. Collapse the steering shaft under the hood and make a relocation bracket to mount the column to under the dash,or relocate the factory mounting clamp. The relocation bracket is probably as simple as a flat plate with 4 holes drilled in it.Mount the column further forward. 2nd try. Gm columns are very interchangeable I'd look at a column from an s10 real hard. You should have a clamp similiar to this,see if you can just relocat it's position on the column,and shorten the underwood double d shaft it just pushes in when you melt the plastic pins. And look at steering wheels with no dish

You are definitely on the taller side.

This is a fact, Squares don't like us bigger taller people. I wish there was a magic fix for it, like a shorter column swap.

Is your seat relatively new? I recently replaced the seat foam and seat cover on my ‘75 GMC, and the steering wheel clearance is now really tight (I’m only about 5’8” and 185 lbs). I’ve tilted the steering wheel up some and that helps, but that brand new foam is much different than the old worn seat.

Is your seat relatively new? I recently replaced the seat foam and seat cover on my ‘75 GMC, and the steering wheel clearance is now really tight (I’m only about 5’8” and 185 lbs). I’ve tilted the steering wheel up some and that helps, but that brand new foam is much different than the old worn seat.

Nope...it is original. Gonna have it reupholstered. Maybe they can do something to help the situation......

I had a similar issues and was able to loosen the bracket under dash alone with the others along the column out to the steering box and get about another 1/4 to 1/2 in. Helped some for me.
