Been a while since i posted and also a while since i had a spanner in my hand. Short story. Bought a non running franken truck. 6.2 diesel. (In the UK)

Starter stays engaged and cranking when the key is released.

Starter is an ACdelco. Wiring checked. Starter bench tested. Tried shims.

Saw on another forum the spacer in the nose cone was wrong and causing the same issue. It was rebuilt by an unknown place prior to me buying it and i was wondering if this could be my issue or if its the right starter for my engine - flex plate - gearbox.

Any chance someone with a 6.2 diesel V8 could measure the spacer? I’m getting 4mm.

Leave the main cable (battery) off apply power to the key switch terminal so the gear will extend but not turn and make sure you can fit a heavy paper clip or piece of mechanics wire between the teeth on the starter and flexplate/flywheel, shim as needed. Than make sure when you remove power from the switch terminal the gear disengages from the flexplate/flywheel under its own spring tension. If it is slow to return or just hangs there and you need to push it back, starter needs replaced. This last bit can be checked on the bench.

The 6.2s have more than one reason that the starter stays engaged,1 is a relay problem, keeping power to the starter solenoid. Another is low batteries causing high amperage causing the solenoid points to stick. 1st make sure the battery or batteries are fully charged. 2nd attach a test light to the solenoid trigger if the light is still lit when this occurs,it's an electrical problem. Sorry my starter is on my truck can't measure anything for you. Good luck.
