Speedo started jumping around a little, then worked intermittently, then finally died.

Unhooked cable from transfer case yesterday (np208), and ran it with a drill. Speedo functions.

Where the cable screws into the transfer case, there are 2 90° adapters. Is this normal? 2 adapters screwed together? Couldn’t separate them. Didnt wanna torque on them too much and break something. Not sure if these are still available new. The little cover holding in the Speedo gear was actually turning while trying to unscrew the adapter. And do these 90° adapters come in different ratios? Speedo was fairly accurate before it died.

Second question. IF I have to remove the output housing on the transfer case to replace the drive gear for the Speedo gear, do I have to remove the driven gear and its cover first?

Using the ole pocket computer for a Speedo right now lol

Thanks

More than likely, it’s your speedometer cable, the cable stretches and gets bound up as it spins and when you take it out and run it off of a drill it’s not crammed up in there anymore and it will spin freely. I’ve heard of people taking a die grinder and cutting a little bit off the end of the cable. I tried that once I guess I didn’t cut enough off! But replacing the cable fixed my problem

The speedo output is held in with a single bolt and retaining fork, like a distributor clamp. Remove the bolt and pull straight out. Then you can remove the tail housing.

What about those adapters??

Why two and are there different ones? Different ratios maybe?
