Snap ring lock plate

I removed by locking plate to install a cancell cam since there wasnt one in there. when I try to compress the lock plate down to put the snap ring in it’s grove the lock Plate will not compress enough for the ring to go into the grove. any ideas??

Is it a tilt column?

Are you pushing with your fingers or using the tool?

It's really hard to push without the tool. Quick search in the forum spit out this, contains a pic of the tool.

As mentioned it's really hard to do without a tool. I made my own tool it's pretty simple. Before I had the tool I've done it without but I may have had an extra hand pulling out the shaft. What's happening is the shaft is sliding into the column away from the plate.

Also, tilt and non-tilt columns use a different cancel cam. I know from experience that the plate cannot be installed if you are trying to put a non-tilt style into a tilt column.

Green colored cam for non-tilt, white colored cam for tilt columns.
