Hi, I just wasted a bunch of time trying to get the shifter back into SM465 properly. It kinda went in, but wouldn't shift anything. Eventually I got it in properly, and thought I would document what worked for me for other's benefit:
It's all about the position of the shift rails. The pictures attached illustrate the 3 possible positions of the reverse shift rail in SM465. The front of the truck is at the top of the picture. The shifter is removed and the pictures are looking down into SM465 from the shifter hole. The reverse shift rail is the one at the left (out of 3 rails: the L-1 rail is at the right, the 2-3 is in the middle).
The picture "1_neutral" shows the reverse shift rail in neutral (so are the other 2).
The picture "2_halfway_between_neutral_and_reverse" shows the reverse shift rail halfway between neutral and reverse (the rail has been moved with a flat screwdriver toward the front of the truck, the rail can be moved into any of the 3 positions this way).
The picture "3_reverse" shows the reverse shift rail in reverse.
The reverse shift rail must be in neutral to remove or install the shifter (this is what worked for me).
The reverse shift rail must be halfway between neutral and reverse to remove or install the SM465 lid.
